A book just about Mendeleyev would have proved more useful and worthy of a place on bookshelves. Despite this work's many merits, Strathern's authorial alchemy hasn't managed to turn his base elements into gold. Slowly and methodically, with many back slips the body of chemical understanding was expanded. What seemed to many a crazy quilt of knowledge started to solidify into a science. Author Strathern is able to maintain a lively narrative of the foibles and breakthroughs over many centuries. The conclusion didn’t show how aMendeleyev’s table evolved tp the current table.
