His stage play adaptation of Krindlekrax has also proved very popular

One of the best books I have ever read. Nobody makes characters like Ridley.

Ruskin Splinter is small and thin, with knock-knees, thick glasses and. One of the best books I have ever read. May 04, 2012 Clare Browne rated it it was amazing. Ruskin Splinter is small and thin, with fuzzy red hair and glasses like saucers. He wore black shorts that showed off his nobberly knees, he wore black boots and his arms looked like twigs. The idea of him being a hero is laughable; at least everyone on Lizard seems to think so.

Yet another Young Adult book for the exaltation of the Nerd. Our children can now happily grow up to join the Nerd pantheon.

As an American, I can't help but feel insulted that the name of a famous American entertainer (Elvis) was chosen for the name of the dim-witted lummox that serves as the villain of the piece.

Nothing happens in the first 100 pages except the loving description of the handful of quaint eccentric caricatures that people this story. There is a perfunctory and obligatory action sequence towards the end.

As a country boy, the big pro-urban living message at the end stuck in my craw as well.

This book was a major disappointment after reading "Dakota of the White Flats".

I first became interested in Philip Ridley's works after watching the dark movie The Reflecting Skin which he wrote. Since then I've read a couple of his plays. When I discovered that he also wrote children's books I had to try them too.
Ridley succeeds in this one. Ruskin is a boy who wants to become the hero in his school play. Unfortunately his dream is crushed when his enemy Elvis gets the role. He also discovers that a dangerous crocodile lives in the neighborhood sewer. Ruskin eventually becomes the hero he longs to be.
Although I prefer his more edgy work this is worth picking up.

My 8 year old daughter had to read this as a school book. She was supposed to read one chapter - she sat and read the entire book in one sitting. She loved it. I later read it aloud to her and to her 5 year old brother. We all thought it was excellent and could not wait to read each chapter. I read one chapter aloud in tears - it was very moving. The book inspired my daughter, she happily completed all school work to do with this book and enjoyed acting out a scene from the book and best of all it helped her to think of herself as a "good reader" and to love books. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
