The characters are very caring and loving. It is a simple book, but a heart warming one. At the end, there is even a tutorial on how to make your own rabbit puppet out of a paper bag. Nice read.

Mrs. Lee has a classroom full of brand new first-graders. On the first day of class, Mrs. Less asks her students to introduce themselves, and then she introduces them to a very special friend. "This is Martha," she says, holding a big, white rabbit. "If you are kind, you can help take care of her." Martha quickly becomes a fixture in the class. She hops around the room while the children do their schoolwork. Martha licks Katie's face while she is reading, and sits right in the middle of the puzzle Gabe is assembling. Martha even hops over to Nick to comfort him when he is sad that he got in trouble in class. All the students love Martha, and just how much they think of her becomes evident when the principal announces First Grade Day. Mrs. Lee allows each child to paint a square piece of cloth in preparation for the event. "Paint a picture of yourself, or a friend in class," she says, "and I'll sew the pieces together." Soon, Mrs. Lee has a very unique quilt - on every single square there is a picture is of Martha! Picking up on this unexpected theme, the class decides to call themselves "The First Grade Bunnies." They prepare bunny ears and bunny puppets as part of their First Grade Day performance, but there is one big problem. Martha has disappeared! Will the group of young students be able to find their class mascot? Will the children be able to enjoy their special day without her?

"Hello, First Grade" is a cute and engaging story. Children will relish the idea of having a rabbit friend in class, and they'll enjoy the thought that kids can work together to create something as sophisticated as a quilt. "Hello, First Grade" is reminiscent of a picture book in that it doesn't have chapters, can be easily read aloud to non-readers in one sitting, and has colorful pictures on every page. However, because it has the size and appearance of a chapter book, young readers are likely to feel that this is a more advanced story than the picture books they will soon to leave behind.
