Born in Salinas, California, in 1902, John Steinbeck grew up in a fertile agricultural valley about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast - and both valley and coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a labourer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).

I discovered the works of John Steinbeck back in 1981-ish when I was trying to "expand my horizons" as a literate person trying to move on from shoddy works of horror, (which I still love reading) to more thought provoking and meaningful works of fiction. Of course several books by John Steinbeck were on this list of "MUST READS". Reading John for the first time was an awaking to me.
