Grade 5-8?This book could greatly mislead readers, as the cover implies that it is the diary of a 14-year-old girl in Virginia during the Civil War, and nothing within the book would lead them to think otherwise.

A Confederate girl in Gordonsville, Virginia, in 1864, Emma Simpson writes about the hardships of growing up during a turbulent time. Upon first reading it, one is likely to attribute the many lapses in character and plot development to the fact that this was a teenager's diary. Even the epilogue telling of the young woman's life after the war adds to this illusion. So it is likely to come as a great surprise to read in the "About the Author" section at the end that this is fiction.

In a book set in 1864, in Virginia, in the midst of the Civil War, the plantation family is giving weekly lessons to their slave children to read and write! This is terrible history - teaching reading and writing to a slave was a dire offense in the South, thanks to the Slave Codes and Anti-Literacy laws, most of which originated in Virginia a century before this book is set! . The Good: The entire focus of the Dear America series is to give a real-life portrait of everyday life in days gone by, and this book does that fairly well. It's also great to see that Christian faith and a love for literature are portrayed in a positive light, the former of which is a bit surprising for a secular book.

I love anything about the Civil War and this was a great book. I love the Dear America Series. I know it is a young adult series but I think it is great for anyone any age! Myself(45) my Mom(77) love these books and can't wait to read them!

My ESL student has read this book about the Civil War from a Southern viewpoint. She found it to be very sad, but enlightening. I consider all the books in the Dear Ameria Series to be worthwhile.

This little work of historical fiction helps young school-aged kids to understand the issues dealt with by those who lived through the Revolutionary War. I bought it for my nine-year old granddaughter, and she loved it.

My 10 year old and I love this series. This book is a great way for kids to understand the civil war and what it was about. It has opened up a lot of discussions. It has been somewhat difficult for her to understand some of the "old language style". We are reading this one together.
This book is fiction and is not true. It was okay.
