Nina Bawden CARRIE’S WAR Illustrated by Faith Jaques PUFFIN Contents Introduction Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four Chapter Five Chapter. Carrie’s War. Nina Bawden was born in London, but grew up in different parts of Britain: in Norfolk, where her mother was born, and in Wales, where she went to school during wartime evacuation from London. In a new home and without her parents to advise her Carrie has to work out for herself how she feels about the people and places around her and about how to respond to the unusual circumstances in which she finds herself.

Carrie’s War is perhaps the most well-known book in Nina Bawden’s vast oeuvre. Nina Bawden was a popular British novelist and children's writer. Just a little older than her main character, Bawden was evacuated from London to Wales at 14 in 1939, but returned to London in 1942. I am sure that Bawden’s experiences are what make Carrie’s War such a compelling story – as they say write what you know. Carrie's War was written in 1973, but still resonates in today’s world, making it definitely a book for read.
