The Hardy Boys Casefiles series started with Iola getting killed by a terrorist bomb placed in the Hardy boys' car. This I think was generally a very bad idea. I have not read no. 1 and no. 2 of this series, but no. 4 and no. 80 (a high number but actually a sequel to no. 4) are surprisingly good (if you can stand the completely unrealistic creations of 'doubles'). The plot is great: the boys must save Iola from a team of scientists who are on a terror groups payroll. Wait but didnt Iola die in DoT? read and find out.

I began reading the Casefiles series around 90/91 or so and sporadically since then, [picking them up whenever I found them at bookstores or libraries up until Simon and Shuster cancelled the series. Anyway, last month I decided to reread them and pick up any that I' didnt have via Amazon sellers, before the debut of the new Hardy Boys Adventures coming inFfeb 2013. The LAzarus Plot holds up well, and follows in the footsteps of Dead on Target, Evil Inc and the Cult of Crime for having good action and pacing. The plot is great: the boys must save Iola from a team of scientists who are on a terror groups payroll. Wait but didnt Iola die in DoT? read and find out. A must buy for Hardy fans even though, just like The Cult of Crime, its smaller in scope that DoT and Evil Inc.

This is one of my favorite books. Even though it was sad I couldn't help but read it over and over again. It's about when Joe spots his dead girlfriend in the woods of Maine while fishing and so he convinces Frank to help him find Iola. Turns out it's not really Iola but someone who had gotten kidnapped, a plastic surgery, and her memory brainwashed to think she is Iola and that Joe was trying to harm her. The whole fake-Iola thing is a conspiracy plotted by terrorists and assasins to kill the two Hardy Boys.

This has got to be my favorite book of all time!!!!!! The suspence will take over you so completely you'll think you're there! The action in the book is breath-taking! The drama will leave you speechless. The tone in every word spoken will leave you afraid to turn the page, so not to ruin the moment. It will seem like the book is glued to your hand; You won't be able to put it down. And at the end, when you think all hope is lost... I'll leave you to find out what happens. This is an absolutaly awesome book!
By the way, you should read #1 Dead on Target before this one, so you have some idea as to what's going on.

Joe's grieving and desperate hope that Iola is still alive (it was never actually proven that Iola was in the car) give these books a dark and emotional atmosphere, in addition they are quite suspenseful. The "Network" and the "Grey Man" elements of this series are just stupid, but the way the Hardy boys trick the Grey Man and his boss in no. 4 is just great.

These two books at least stand out among almost all the other Casefiles which are quite simply awfully bad.

The possibility that Iola is still alive dwindles away in later books in addition they are boring and unrealistic and proving that 'pace and action' never makes a good book in itself, and rather the opposite when there is no atmosphere and suspense. Also the character of Frank is ruined in a big number of these books. While supposed to be the one who thinks before acting, as opposed to the emotional Joe who acts before thinking, Frank very often ends up as seeming cowardly or heartless, or even both. Joe is always successful, often contrary to Frank's advice, making Frank end up as nothing but a joke. Even the covers often reflect this with Frank looking scared and Joe looking determined. The boys' father also ends up a joke in some books, deceived by his sons, like in no. 10. And the 'political correct' indoctrination of some of these books is just sickening, like no. 8 "See No Evil" (see my review of it and my reply to a comment).

But none of this applies to no. 4 and no. 80 so I can at least give fours stars to each of them. However they are not as good as the best of the original series. See my own comment to this review for a comparison.
