The Meg Mackintosh books let the young reader follow along and solve the mystery along with Meg, using visual clues in the pictures and information in the story. There is sufficient suspense to keep my 6-7 year old interested and she really gets involved by actively thinking and looking for clues to try to solve the mystery before Meg. In this book, Meg and her class are on a field trip at an old castle. A jeweled chalice disappears, and Meg (and the reader) must follow the clues to catch the real thief before they get away.

This is the third book in the Meg Mackintosh (A Solve-It-Yourself Mystery) series by Lucinda Landon. The mystery wasn't too difficult, but I certainly encouraged our girls to look carefully at the pictures to discover the solution. This story is set in a Scottish castle-themed museum and has all the trappings of a medieval mystery. We really enjoyed reading this story together and we will certainly look for more of the books in this series at our local library. Oct 20, 2013 Yasi rated it it was amazing.

Meg and her classmates head to a medieval castle for a field trip and end up with a mystery that was more than they planned. Best suited for older elementary students, Meg Mackintosh relies on clues in the story as well as observations of clues in the illustrations. It was truly a lightbulb moment for my youngest child when she realized the knight had to be lying about someone going out the window because the illustration still showed intact cobwebs on the sill. The kids felt like real detectives right along with Meg Mackintosh. This book is great for allowing kids to get into the story. With prompts for the readers such as "How?" or "Why did Meg know?" this book is truly a page turner without a need for a study guide or notebooking assignments. And the best news is that Meg Mackintosh is a series so your child might want to read them all. (A warning for the squeamish, blood is mentioned in this story as a clue. One of the castle workers steals a weapon in order to fake a crime scene and in the process gets a cut hand. It's not gory, but it is worth noting that it is a part of this book in case there is a very young audience.)

We had a great time reading the book together -- a few times I gently suggested things to think about before she turned the page and with each subsequent book she got better at figuring out the clues. A strong girl character, but with enough brothers/boys in the stories to make them interesting to boys and girls.

Wonderful book. My son loves mystery books, and after moving through all the Nate The Great series, and then hit and miss with Cam Jansen and Encyclopedia Brown, he has devoured all of the Meg Mackintosh books. Very engaging, nice images that are used to help solve the mysteries. Hope Lucina writes some more!!
