by Andrew Authaslam, Barbara Taylor, Andrew Haslam. I was surprised how thin this book is when I received it. There are large color photos on each page and very large print. It is very basic but manages to give some great information in limited words. Of course it doesn't go on to explain "Why?" - But is great to start a conversation and good jumping off point to get children to want to know more about the ocean. Our 5 year old asked a lot of questions before turning to the next page, so the book is good for getting children interested and leaves them yearning to learn more. Published by Thriftbooks

A review from Mrs. L

I am very surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book. I also learned from it even though I bought it to give to a teacher friend who was planning a unit on oceans and wanted to supplement her curriculum. So, I read it ahead of time so we could talk about its contents together.

First of all, the pictures and illustrations are excellent. It does a good job of providing visual pictures to describe aspects of the ocean that are difficult to envision. There are even pictures of experiments and projects featuring children which serve to entice interest as well as educate. The experiments and examples are also organized in a way that children would be capable of reproducing them and explaining them. This was a great addition to an already high quality book.

There are models which provide indepth scenes of oceans and ocean life. I loved the collages that were done to show the deep sea floor, the tidal zones and marine life. The photos are meaningful and hit the nail on the head for what is needed for teaching.

I think this is an excellent resource for teachers and for home school parents. It is an excellent source for curriculum supplementation as well as a stand alone resource. I would not hesitate to give this book as a high quality gift for a child is grade 3 or higher. I think a very gifted, artistic teacher or parent could easily be inspired by some of the illustrations to develop a process-oriented project for the students to paint, draw, illustrate, sculpt or design models to reinforce what the children are learning about ocean life, habitats, map skills. This books also helps children to understand the concept of a "landscape" and the different types of landscapes.

If you want to help younger students ( say, third grade and up) to learn about oceans, then this is the book/resource for you. It would be a wonderful book to read aloud to students during science time and offer opportunities for questions and discussions. In fact, there are numerous opportunities to engage students in discussions and for the enthusiastic student there are numerous opportunities for them to identify and further their interests in the ocean.

There are other books in this series: RIVERS, MAPS, and WEATHER. If they are of the same caliber as this book, well . . . I think they just might be worth using as teaching resources and reading enjoyment. (For adults and children!!!!!)
