Printed versions date back to the 1840s, but the story itself is thought to be much older. The phrases used in the story, and the various morals drawn from it, have become embedded in Western culture.
Jones confesses to the kind of sordid, outlaw upbringing that would make even Keith Richards blush. Punk's origin story, he insists, is often relayed by people with an axe to grind or those who simply weren't even there.
