I am a now retired teacher who used to do read-alouds with my sixth graders at a middle school. Around 1993 (or so, can't remember the exact year), I read my English class BANANA TWIST. It was absolutely hilarious. I'm laughing, the class was laughing, to the point of tears. So I followed up a month later with the sequel. Same kids. Not nearly as well-received. But I still had very fond memories of this book.

So I bought it recently for nostalgia's sake. Guess I've gotten too old or cranky or whatever, but while the book was still amusing, especially in the initial elevator scenes, I couldn't figure out why we had all gone crazy over it. The experience was very much like rewatching old movies that I used to love. Not so great anymore, I sadly have to admit to myself. Is it my newly refined sensibilities or just the stuttering of brain synapses? Can't tell.

So I'm sure this book will still be very good to some. It has a very thin plot, but the dialogue is crisp and the comic timing superb. It will entertain many readers, I'm sure. (Then again, I thought I looked pretty cool in that long hairstyle in the 70s that made me appear simian, at best.)

Addendum: I also remember this author creating "The Shrinking of Treehorn" with Edward Gorey. Positively brilliant back then. Comic irony at its best. But now I'm a bit worried about revisiting it.

Okay so i'm 26 so what... The first time I read this book I was in the 5th grade and I still roll on the floor laughing. If you want a great book to share with your kids this is it. Our hero, Jonah D. Krock meets his arch nemisis "Goober Grube". A typical adolescent who thinks Jonah has a banana fixation. Jonah spends the whole book trying to avoid "Goober" and fill out his application for Fairlee, a boarding school. Not this homelife is that bad. With parents who believe junk food is of satan, and television is even worse... You'll love this one. Don't forget to pick up the sequel Banana Blitz.

I've been searching for this book for years but couldn't remember the title. My son and I read it together when he was in elementary school and we laughed until we cried. Glad to finally find it.
