by Gene Zion (Author). Squirrel is up to no good and-SPOILER ALERT-is about to ruin a squirrel family's Thanksgiving but both the dinner and the holiday are saved in the nick of time. There's drama, there's adventure, there's bravery, there's redemption-all in a few short pages. It wouldn't be Thanksgiving, a holiday that has few classic stories, without this book.

Saturday, July 11, 2015. Plus it has this sweet shot of Margaret and Gene in the back flap. But it's when the squirrel family is forced to get their feast elsewhere that the true story moves into action. Recognize what's on the menu at The Squirrel Cafe?

Saturday, July 11, 2015. The Meanest Squirrel I Ever Met. The Meanest Squirrel I Ever Met Gene Zion ~ Margaret Bloy Graham ~ Charles Scribner's Sons, 1962. I keep coming back to Margaret Bloy Graham's death earlier this year. Nibble was a little squirrel who lived in the woods with his father and mother. On Thanksgiving morning, his mother brought a basket up from the storeroom. In the basket were pecan nuts, walnuts and hazelnuts. Recognize what's on the menu at The Squirrel Cafe?

A delightful child's tale where the bad guy turns around and becomes a man of his word. In a society with continual erosion of values, this is a time-tested classic.

Just love the illustrations by Margaret Bloy Graham.

My husband surprised me with this book, which was a childhood favorite of mine. It's a great story, good for bedtime because it takes a few minutes to read but is easy to understand. The illustrations are adorable.

I bought this for my children when they were little and we all loved it. I am so surprised that it has not been reprinted. I had to buy used copies for my grandchildren and it is still a hit. Reading "The Meanest Squirrel I Ever Met" has become a Thanksgiving ritual for our family, adults and children alike. Mr. M.O. Squirrel is up to no good and--SPOILER ALERT--is about to ruin a squirrel family's Thanksgiving but both the dinner and the holiday are saved in the nick of time.

There's drama, there's adventure, there's bravery, there's redemption--all in a few short pages. It wouldn't be Thanksgiving, a holiday that has few classic stories, without this book.

Suitable for age 3 and up.

I was lucky to have found this book at a library book sale. I am always on the lookout for books from this era(when I was born) because they have great story lines and moral characters. My favorite part of the book is when M.O. Squirrel writes, "signed, Mr. M.O. Squirrel, former sinner." Where are you going to find any character in a modern book admitting his faults like that? Awesome book, and my kids love it!

This is an enchanting tale about Nibble the squirrel, his parents and Mr. M.O. Squirrel (the meanest squirrel you ever met!) I had this book as a child and now have it in my own child's library. Even as an adult I enjoy reading it. Highly recommend for any childs book collection!
... is how squirrels play hockey! This book is very entertaining and reawakens the kid in any adult who reads it - including hockey fans! Nut on the ice is a small part of this tale, but the entire story is wonderful. I hope that this little book sees reprints for all time to come - it should be in every kids' (and grownups!) library! Find it - don't worry about it being used if that's all you can find. It's a keeper!
