Thursey is too strong-willed to be intimidated by her stepsisters with their cruel taunts claiming that her father died a coward in the recent wars. She defies them, hiding the little books she makes that preserve a variety of Cinderella stories from around the world--tales she hears from travelers on the high road who take shelter at the inn run by her stepmother. She knows the sisters would destroy the small, handmade books, for in their view, it is unnatural for a common girl to know how to read.   But when the king's summer gala draws near and Thursey is, as usual, left at home, she takes charge of her own fate. With help from a traveling monk and a friendly goatherd, she secretly prepares to attend the ball. Does she have help, as well, from the ugly white mare whom she loves? And will she gain more than a rare evening of happiness, perhaps even the joy of new-found love?   This vivid Cinderella retelling with a spunky and inventive heroine, set in a medieval European village, is a romance enjoyed by YA readers as well as younger ones.

Like any fairy tale, this book is deceptive. Although there are only 121 pages, the tale told has great depth. Every page is stuffed with imagery that surrounds the reader and holds one captive until the narrative is complete. It took me two days to read it because I had to go to work and needed to put it down. The drawings are charming and interesting; they enhance the story rather than detract from it. I will admit to being curious to all the tales told within the narrative. The little descriptions tease the imagination so that I wish to read them as well. I am grateful that this book has been made available again so I could add it to my collection. I highly recommend it for anyone building a young adult home, classroom, or campus library with books that will enthrall young readers. If you are a teal pumpkin Halloween house for those children with food allergies, consider this as the treat you offer young guests. The only trick is the one played on the stepsisters.
This book is such a cute, charming re-telling of the story of Cinderella. It has a lot of the elements of the Cinderella story you'll find in other re-tellings, but this has a unique spin on the story. I loved this book, and I am so glad that I decided to buy a used copy of it even though it was a little more than I usually pay for my used books. It was worth every penny.
If you love the story of Cinderella or love fairy tale re-tellings, this is a must have book for your collection!
This book, though rather juvenile in appearance, is pure magic. Shirley Rousseau Murphy is adept at creating sympathetic characters with a few, well-placed descriptions. Thursey is a spirited and intelligent Cinderella who enjoys defying her greedy stepmother and hideous stepsisters who use her as a slave for their inn. Loving stories and fairy tales of all sorts, her own begins when she meets a kind goat boy named Gilly returning with the queen and prince after the war. But is he really who he seems? And though he partly plays the role of the beneficial fairy, it's ultimately up to Thursey to make her own magic come true.
Simply and beautifully told, Silver Woven in My Hair was one of my first fairy tale retellings (along with Beauty by Robin McKinley) and remains one of my favorites. A pleasant companion to the equally excellent Ella Enchanted, this book is definitely worth the effort it will take to find.
This is an amazing retelling of Cinderella. It is young adult. We are shown the hard times behind Cinderella's life. The constant chores, the raggedy clothes, the insults heaped on her dead father, and the struggle to make the family business of an inn stay afloat. Cinderella is kind, a hard worker, and a dreamer. When she meets a goat herd she thinks she can finally find love. And when a huge ball is announced to celebrate the Prince's birthday she wants more than anything to go. With some help from friends anything is possible.

This book made me laugh and I could not put it down. A true fairy tale to treasure.
That may be an odd thing to say, but it's actually true. When I was in 4th grade (needless to say, many years ago) I read this book and fell in love with it and with reading. I remember being riveted by the characters. It taught me about empathy, somehow. I've never looked back. Books are what get me through long plane rides (and short ones for that matter!), childhood family fights, long days on the beach in SoCal, and any number of moments throughout my life. Books- fiction mainly- are a constant in my life. And I owe it to this book!
