I would caution you against using the Bible as a historical document because the "Bible" as most people understand it is in fact a collection on religious texts systematically chosen by the early Christian church as canonical (fancy way of saying authorized). Thus, the early Christians systematically chose which religious texts found in their community supported their authority, morals and ideas.
