Nestled in the mountainous hinterlands of the Philippine Cordillera, the Ifugao people of Batad have lived for centuries, eking out a living in upland sweet potato fields and in the extensive rice terraces they carved out of the mountains. For many years, the Ifugao people led a complex and ritualistic life, appeasing hundreds of deities. Every aspect of their lives was controlled through sacrifice and communication with the spirit world.

Brooke first encountered the headhunting Iban of the Saribas-Skrang in Sarawak at the Battle of Betting Maru in 1849. He gained the signing of the Saribas Treaty with the Iban chief of that region, who was named Orang Kaya Pemancha Dana "Bayang". The Iban conducted sacred ritual ceremonies with special and complex incantations to invoke god's blessings, which were associated with headhunting. An example was the Bird Festival in the Saribas/Skrang region and Proper Festival in the Baleh region, both required for men of the tribes to become effective warriors.

The Encounter, published in 1996 and written by K. A. Applegate, is the third book in the Animorphs series. It is narrated by Tobias. Tobias and Rachel liberate a caged red-tailed hawk from a car dealership, Dealin' Dan Hawke's Used Cars, where it is being used as a mascot in advertisements

To prevent violent death, the heads of their enemies were taken through warfare and ambush along trails. The practice of head-hunting was central to their worship and, although the American and Philippine governments essentially put an end to the practice, the ritual lived on. Beautiful on the Mountains: The Ifugao Adventure is Newell's story of the trials, failures, joys, and successes of a completely non-Christian tribal group as they embrace the Christian faith and the compelling message of God.

I bought a copy of this book and I enjoyed reading it. However, there are some parts that I don't agree with the author. I grew up from a small village and though they don't have the houses for girls, we are sent to our grandma's house to sleep. I and other village girls slept in my grandmother's house since she have the most available space. We were told that long ago, she and the girls of the same age slept in a house where an old granny or widow would guard them as chaperone. Any young man who want to visit will be allowed but with the elder's supervision.

Len Newell, a hardy Canandian professional linguist and bible translator, recounts his visits to the Ifugao tribe of the Phillipines while demonstrating skills as an anthropologist, medical technician, diplomat, and above all, as a minister. He recounts a lifelong fascination of the Ifugao people whom he came to love. The Ifugao are rice terrace dwellers whose habitats are not easily accessible to civilization except by arduous hiking from remote towns in north central Phillipines. He and his wife managed to construct a house and then live among the Ifugao, building mutual respect. While his ultimate goal was a bible translation, another goal was to convert the Ifugao to Christianity. The struggle was enormous, a struggle between an ancient spirit world and the teachings of Christianity. Progress was slow. However, as a translation of the New Testament was completed after many years, the work of conversion became easier.
Newell's ministry involved personal hardship and adventure. His writing is fast paced, colorfully conveying the high points of his journey with his wife, Doreen. Life, death, livelihoods and travails of the Ifugao are graphically recounted. It may seem hard to believe that adventure among headhunters is possible in our lifetimes, but Newell tells us about that reality as he experienced it. This is a well-written book that I recommend

The three stars is not an accurate review of the book because the writing, information, and entertainment factor is mixed with my disgust at how a person could come into a society with the goal of "civilization", colonization and converting people to Christianity and not seeing how wrong that is. It's a book about the destruction of a fine culture and ancient way of life, and that absolutely disgusts me. With every story, I well with sadness to see the author succeed and praise God for the his success in instilling fear and superstition in a culture that survived quite nicely for millenia without him.

That said, the writing and storytelling are good. It helps me to understand how trust and bribery has led to the ruination of my people, Native Americans, and poor people everywhere.
