"Studying synonyms trains the mind by developing precise and accurate habits of thought, and it provides a wealth of knowledge. . . . Studying Greek synonyms is even more rewarding, since the Greeks were a people of the subtlest intellect who saw distinctions where others saw none and who cultivated the study and use of synonyms. . . . Because the words of the New Testament are God's words it is important that we understand every delicate variation in an author's meaning."—R. C. Trench, from the preface

God choose to communicate with words, words from what are now two dead languages. Ah. but therein is a blessing. Since the ancient biblical Hebrew and the Konie Greek are no longer practiced means they are frozen in time. Which means that what the words meant then, how they were used, context, etc. can be learned which leads to clarity, comprehension, and most imprtant, MEANING!. It is most important to know what the bible means, rather than what the bible says. This book is another excellent tool for any who want to put the labor into discovering what the Jews wrote and communicated.

I cannot read it because it is sideways in my computer. I have reported this and it is suppose to be fixed. It has been several weeks and still not fix. Would like the book if I could read it. Please have the fix soon.

I have the print edition. I have used this for years. I would have given it 5 stars, except that I am too often disappointed to find that the synonyms that I want to look at were not chosen by Trench. However, the ones he has chosen are compared in great detail and help illuminate the New Testament koine Greek text.

I also like the fact that one of my favorite Greek lexicons, Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, refers to Trench in entries that are included in this fine text.

I'm not sure if it is true that this resource would be helpful for anyone with no knowledge of New Testament Greek. So I would caution against it.

Regarding the Kindle edition, I noticed that the sample given here on line is also sideways. Caveat emptor.

Lastly it is interesting to see some of Trench's other accomplishments. As were so many scholars of his time he was multifaceted. A remarkable man. He loved words and as such was a member of London's Philological Society and is credited with helping to provide impetus for what became the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).
