History, Trends and Possibilities. Patrick Johnstone Colorado Springs, CO 2012-03-31. Johnstone’s characteristic optimism about the state of the worldwide church does not blind him to global realities. Johnstone is a missionary currently serving as regional director of WEC International’s European sending bases. He recognizes nominalism and immaturity, even among evangelicals, where it exists, soberly analyzes the present state of the church, and expresses cautious, well-grounded expectations for the coming decades.

Johnstone homes in on the role of the local church in tackling the unfinished task of world evangelization, especially that of reaching the world's least evangelized peoples with the Gospel. What is the future of the global church, and how and where do we fit into that picture?

This book tells the story of what is happening to the church world wide. Everyone has heard the stories about growth here and there but few books tell that story completely. This is that book! This has to be the most complete book on where the faith is today. The author puts numbers to the trends shaping the world today.

I find this puts the facts to what everyone knows is happening. God is at work in the world. There is growth for the conservative churches. The mainline liberal churches seem to be contracting. This growth seems to be taking place across borders to. The church is growing like wildfire in places like Asia and Africa. It is contracting drastically in Europe. The author also does talk about the other faiths of the world. Some are very static in their numbers. Other faiths, like Islam is growing, but due to radically larger birth rates over other people in that area.

This book isn't really a book. It is more like a bunch of briefing slides with the speakers comments written down. The graphics are great. They really put a wham to the story. To me this briefing style makes the story hard to read. It would be an incredible earth shattering story if someone would actually write a book. Through the graphs and text copy here and there across the book there is a huge story. A reader has to dive to find it. The author breaks down the situation to small parts of some critical countries. It does show that we are facing an extension of conflict between the Islamic and Christian church; just like it was 1,000 years ago, all within a few hundred miles.

A must book for any church leader. Maybe not what the average reader wants.

When I was a student in university, God used Patrick Johnstone's Operation World and other similar resources to begin to educate me and give me a burden for what He was doing and wanted to do in the world around us. Some years after that, I lived for 16 years as an international worker in one certain corner of the world, Partly due to preoccupation with what I was doing here during that time, and partly due to our organization cutting back on missions resources previously made available to missionaries due to budget constraints, I did not always do a good job in keeping up to date with the big picture which every global Christian should ask God's Spirit to impart and maintain. Thus, my "tunnel vision" grew more and more severe.

Enter Patrick Johnstone's The Future of the Global Church. Reading this resource alongside my daily devotions a page or two at a time, it took me nearly a year to finish this resource book. It's not an easy book to digest (the charts and graphs were sometimes difficult for me to decipher-- maybe due to a minor condition of color blindness) and I found myself plodding through some sections. Two other minor criticisms I have with this work are 1) the tendency to group more by country rather than people group, and 2) projections running out to the year 2050 seem somewhat arbitrary).

Having said that, I would heartily recommend this book as a must-read resource which helps us see the past, present, and future of Jesus' church and the nations amongst which it dwells much more as the God who created the world and everything in it sees it. Leaders may wish to explore the e-books, DVDs, and other resources as well in order to educate church people.

Patrick is one of my definitely go-get-it-now authors. As the long-time editor of the world-spanning prayer guide "Operation World" (country-by-country review of the status of the church, one of the largest if not the largest church survey in the world), he has a breadth of knowledge about the status of the church that few can match. This book is a wonderful synopsis of that knowledge, and covers the major challenges the church will face throughout the next generation. I pre-ordered this book and looked for its arrival eagerly. Right now it sets by my bed as I'm going through it; when I am finished it will sit on my "quick-access" book shelf next to other similar works like the World Christian Encyclopedia, Atlas of Global Christianity, Operation World itself, etc. Piper famously said that "missions exists because worship doesn't." The WCE & Atlas & Operation World tell us a lot about the current state of the world. This book extrapolates history and the current state into where we very likely will go in the near future. A significant challenge to the thinking of the church, one every serious Christian should get and read!

This book is full of helpful information for anyone interested in knowing more about the status and trends of the global church. The graphics are well done and the various statistics are relevant and important. Good information for everything from research to mission leadership to sermon preparation.

This is not a "sit down and read" book. It is a reference work. It is a book that I will come back to again and again, seeing something new each time. The charts and graphs are thoroughly explained and beautifully presented on slick thick paper that shows colors at their best.
I was impressed by the thoroughness of the book and the width it covers. Have given already many copies as gifts away and it helped giving the basis for a workshop on the Christian church in Africa. Recommend it highly.
