In this book, Brennan Manning teaches us how to think like Jesus, guiding the reader to discover those subjects on which Jesus did not dwell - security, sensation, and power - and revealing where Jesus focused his thought life - the Father, the disciples, the reign of God, and the world. Coming from the gentle yet compelling voice of Manning, the reader will embrace this call and revel in Manning’s provocative exploration of the mind of Christ. But in his book The Importance of Living Foolish, Manning continues his quest to promote a belief in Christ the recognizes the folly of the modern world and its preoccupation with foolish, fleeting things.

This short book by Brennan Manning is a revised version of a previous work from 1976, which he describes as written with a little bit more grace and humility the second time around. And it’s a good thing. It is absolutely overflowing with grace. The Importance of Being Foolish, on the other hand, seems to be written to someone who has heard the Gospel of grace, but who isn’t experiencing as radical a transformation as might be expected. It’s scathingly critical of our culture at times, which is probably good, but I found myself struggling to stay afloat above my guilt and shame.

Self-deception is the enemy of wholeness because it prevents us from seeing ourselves as we really ar. There are things to be done. Brennan Manning, The Importance of Being Foolish: How to Think Like Jesus.

Self-deception is the enemy of wholeness because it prevents us from seeing ourselves as we really are. It covers up our lack of growth in the Spirit of the truthful One and keeps us from coming to terms with our real personalities. There is no limit to the defenses we contrive against the inbreak of truth into our lives.

In the eyes of the world, Jesus was a fool. He did not abide by the rules of his day; the people he associated with were shunned by society; his Sermon on the Mount reads like a primer on being left behind, stepped on, and ignored. Coming from the gentle yet compelling voice of Brennan Manning, The Importance of Being Foolish is a refreshing reminder of the radical call of Jesus and the transforming love of God. I've always thought the Christian message to be a radical rejection of worldy values. But what's generally preached is a watered down version of this message. Manning boldly and in his familiar style asserts that what the world views as foolish is the wisdom of God. It's a tough message but a wonderful one. 0.

Many years ago author Brennan Manning spent two years living with a monastic community known as the Little Brothers of Jesus. The Little Brothers model their days on what they call the "hidden life" of Jesus, the many years he spent in obscurity devoted to manual labor and prayer before launching his public ministry. His latest book (a revision of one of his earliest books), THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING FOOLISH, is a primer in just such foolishness, and in classic Manning form it doesn't pull any punches. It's prophecy in three parts: The Way We Live, The Mind of Christ, and The Power of the Cross.

"Many of us have been lying to ourselves for so long that our comforting illusions and rationalizations have assumed a patina of truth; we clutch them to our hearts the way a child clutches a favorite teddy bear. . .The first step in the pursuit of truth is not the moral resolution to avoid the habit of petty lying. . .it is the decision to stop deceiving ourselves." (The Importance of Being Foolish~Brennan Manning; pages 4, 5)
I've never read any book my Manning that did not get right to the heart of the matter...our relationship with Jesus. He has a no-holds-barred style that will challenge everyone who reads this book. You will probably find yourself wincing at times as Manning uncovers hidden areas of our lives with surgical skill. His intent, however, is not to point a finger at his reader, rather, he becomes totally vulnerable about his own sins as he leads us into total forgiveness and redemption.
Important book.

When I look for books on Amazon, I look for inspirational authors who have an eternal view of life as it is lived on this glorious globe. In my readers mind I am looking to be inspired by words that excite my eternal soul. If books do not meet this criterion, I do not purchase them. When I use the CLICK TO LOOK INSIDE feature provided by Amazon.com I can quickly see if I am interested of the book.

The book title The Importance of Being Foolish: How to Think Like Jesus- How To Think Like Jesus gives a hint of how the Author, Brennan Manning, is suggesting a new way of feeling and thinking about myself. The book is divided into sections. Part One-THE WAY WE LIVE. Part Two-THE MIND OF CHRIST. Part Three- THE POWER OF THE CROSS.

It is the practical suggestions and statements that makes THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING FOOLISH a book to add to your special library.

I enjoyed the book and it gave me an insight about three themes that I personally need to work on in order to live my life more fully.

Most people will be turned off by the title--but here's a chance to put everyday actions of being a Christian
into a more liberal attitude of non-perfection where you can literally "clown around" instead of being
'holier than thou' and have more fun with yourself and those you love, as well as those whom you think less of--!
A win-win situation all around--!

Brennan Manning always makes me think. He believes that Jesus is our Savior and that by His blood we are saved, which is so right on. Brennan can make you ponder your thinking in each and every devotion or book I've ever read. I love that he writes showing that God is a God of love and wants to see each and everyone of us listed in the Lambs Book of Life. The world has lost a great man of God and Brennan Manning will be missed.

I really enjoy Brennan Mannings writing. I believe that only God can save us and our desire to want to save ourselves stems from the same misconception that Satan had when he challenged God for the kingdom and that is a desire to be autonomous and the ruler of our lives. When we come to the realization that we really do nend a kinsman redeemer we begin to appreciate the greatness of God and become willing to accept the greatest gift ever offered and that is redemption.

This little book was a real surprise. The focus of our church discussion group: "Living With Jesus." This is an 'Imitation Guide' to Christian living explaining in detail what is required to be an Imitator of Christ. I prefer theology that is rich in scriptural reference. Brennan Manning compels the reader toward the scriptures. This is living Christianity sufficient in wisdom to compel repeated readings. This is an IMPORTANT contribution to Christian literature.
