The book details one man’s journey through Peru as he uncovers nine spiritual insights. His book details the attributes that Peck feels make a fulfilled human being. While many have found the plot corny, the insights within captivate the reader into shifting their perspective. Split into three sections, his book talks about discipline (as a means for spiritual evolution), love (as a force for spiritual growth) and grace. Though this book remains popular, some may find the psychological ideas of the book to be somewhat dated. This article was originally published on October 27, 2008.

Who is God? Sometimes our conceptions of God fall into one of two unfortunate but common stereotypes. Is he the commanding God of the Old Testament or the forgiving God of the New Testament? Is he the submissive Jesus of Good Friday or the triumphant Jesus of Easter Sunday? We all desire God s power in our lives, but our understanding of his power often neglects the paradoxes of Scripture.

Too often, we make God too small, too manageable. But careful examination of God's attributes reveals a God full of mystery, eternity, righteousness, and mercy. Very good book. Mainly I say this because of the uncomplicated approach taken by the author. For each attribute there is a chapter. In each chapter the author writes about the attribute from the 'God as mysterious' perspective and how people experience that -- confusion, what is going on here, doubt -- and then writes from the 'God as near' perspective and how people experience that.
The author says experiencing God in both ways is OK. That is the way life is. Very helpful to get the author's permission to sometimes feel one way and at others a different way.

I ordered Great and Terrible Love the minute I finished reading Mark Galli's Jesus Mean and Wild. I intend to read everything he has written. He provides great insight, true to Scripture and inspiring. It is a large step in the right direction. Oh, I almost forgot to say it: Great and Terrible Love greatly exceeded my expectations.

I loved this book. It's a great treatment of some of the biblical aspects of God's character that are often ignored-- or misunderstood. Galli is clear, concise, and thought provoking. I'm sure this is a book I'll turn to again and again for orientation on some of the basic questions about God.

I have always appreciated Mark Galli's writing, so I was looking forward to this theological analysis of the attributes of God. And in typical Galli style, the book is refreshingly honest about the less comfortable aspects of God's nature. He doesn't tip-toe around attributes like God's jealousy and wrath as so many modern authors are prone to do. In fact, he covers a full gamut of God's attributes like immutability, immanence, and Trinity which are all too easy to ignore or disregard because they are too complicated for easy understanding. I was pleased with the breadth of Galli's analysis, as he covered a lot of theological ground in just over 150 pages.

I didn't give the book five stars because its overall feel was a bit more academic than I would have preferred. And that's not to say that Galli failed to personalize these high-minded theological ideas, as he should be commended for telling relevant stories to help to make them more accessible for readers. But there was no flow from chapter to chapter, no point of continuity throughout the book. Instead, it was a collection of entirely disconnected 4-5 page descriptions of one attribute or another. Now, Galli was certainly self-aware of his approach, as he explained in the introduction that the book could be read in any order or in piecemeal fashion because the chapters were not interrelated. And that's why I'm inclined to consider this book primarily a reference book. When I want to read a few pages of insightful commentary about a particular attribute of God, this is a good place to turn. But it's truly a methodical, point-by-point analysis, not a winsome, engaging narrative about the nature of God's love, as I had somewhat hoped it would be. It's a decent reference book to which I'm sure I'll return in the future, but its more academic approach prevents it from being a book to which I'm likely to direct folks who want a compelling, cohesive book about who God is.

What would you expect when you buy a book on the attributes of God? Whatever it may be that you expect, it probably will not be what you get when you begin to read Galli's book A Great and Terrible Love (hereon referred to a GTL).

That's not to say that the book is bad. I greatly enjoyed it. The book is surprising.

GTL takes some of the attributes of God and examines them. It is not examination in a theology proper sort of way, though. We tend to think of attributes of God such as omnipotence, omniscience, transcendence, love, righteousness, etc. as abstract things. Galli does not, and with good reason. They are not abstract. They are lively attributes of the living God.

GTL is an examination of the attributes of God in a very practical way. How do they affect my life? What significance do they hold for us? What is their importance to Christians? These are important questions. GTL goes far in answering them.

Galli has written GTL to be very easy to read. It is not hard reading. I read the book in less than three hours. I honestly did not want to put it down.

This book could be the gateway book that would bring someone into the study of theology.

All oft this being said, I did tend to have a concern about Galli's rendition of the righteousness of God. Perhaps it was his attempt to show us one side of it that left me with a little discomfort. It seemed to be a departure from the typical view of righteousness. It may not have been, but it left that impression with me. I do not think his statement is heretical. I do think it is lacking.

All in all, this book is excellent. It certainly could comfort many a troubled soul. It will also provide knowledge of God to one who is seeking to learn.
