Most parents have daydreamed about grabbing their kids and taking them somewhere else to get them away from whatever bad influence has their attention at the moment, but it's just not possible. In this book, these parents make it happen, or rather, the father makes it happen. Finding that all his children are sliding down that slippery slope to ruin, he and his wife pack up a moving van and the family car, grab the kids and head for his old family home that's out in the middle of nowhere. This book is pure Grace Livingston Hill and the plot is slightly contrived, the characters and beliefs fairly old-fashioned and the emphasis on God pronounced, but it's still an entertaining story. If you don't like Christian themes, or the beliefs of yesteryear, give it a pass, but GLH fans will love it, of course.

Gradually the younger brothers and sisters accepted the change and enjoyed being a part of a family that loved God. Not so the oldest daughter, Betty, who at all costs had to get away and through very bad experiences, finally found her way back to the family. She was a first-class brat and unlikeable but, as in most of Hill's books, was redeemed. Love to read her books.

This story is set in the 1920's, but situations this family deal with could just as easily be today. The kids have run a muck. Teenage rebellion, messy situations, consequences, these parents have their hands full.
Another wonderful book by my favorite author. I love the way She weaves the gospel message, and lyrics of hymns into her story.

I am always surprised at how timeless GLH's books are! The things people deal with now are not much different than those of her day. There's always a relevant message. Prodigal girl was an enjoyable and enlightening read.

Grace Livingston Hill is a wonderful author. It was through her book "By Way of the Silverthorns" that I first learned what being "saved" meant. I have read all of her books and "The Prodigal Girl" is one of my favorites. I always look to see what year the book was originally published as she sets the stories in actual time. I have learned much about the history and culture of the time periods she writes in. She is a beautiful writer.

This is one of my all time favorite novels! I am reminded of my struggles when I was a young girl, whenever I read it. Sometimes we are too young, stupid, and spoiled to see the many blessings that we have and how to use them. We are meant to live for God and this book shows this using the story of a believing man, a loving husband and father who fights tooth and nail to save his family from self-destruction. It is all too easy to get caught up in this world and the shiny baubles and moments of recognition it offers. Though the tale was woven decades ago, its message and even the events contained on its pages are applicable today.

It's so hard to find anything clean to read today! Grace Livingstone Hill's books are very-oldfashioned, sweet and clean. Mother gave them to me to read when I was a teenager. One of the things I love about her books is the way messed-up people and messed-up places get remade, and turned into something beautiful. Real, true makeovers!
Good book for any teen girl who has issues.
