This volume focuses on a central question: What does a person need to know for developing a theology? In other words, this book will not only answer objections lodged against the study of theology but will explain to students, pastors, and laypersons alike what a theologian actually does. It will also present different approaches to the study of theology and review the present status of theological reflection in various Protestant, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic traditions. In the first section of the book evangelical Protestant scholars describe the contributions various disciplines make to the study of theology. In the next section, evangelical Protestant scholars explain the distinctives of their particular tradition's approach in doing theology. In the third part, theologians who do not identify with evangelical Protestant convictions seek to explain the distinctives of their approaches to doing theology. In the final section, Dr. Kantzer provides a summary analysis of how he does theology and interacts critically with a number of the essays in this volume.Among the contributors are Gordon D. Kaufman, Schubert Ogden, J.I. Packer, John Meyendorf, Richard A. Muller, Orlando Costas, Rosemary Radford Ruether, Gerald Sheppard, Harold O.J. Brown, John Yodel, and D.A. Carson.

This is a good collection of essays to commemorate a singificant figure in U.S. Protestantism. The essays, as a whole, however, are not consciously critical and thus omit a crucial element of basic academic writing. The inclusion of the work of the late Dr. Orlando E. Costas is a saving grace but it's too little and too late.

Perhaps a chapter from the Second Great Awakening expert, Dr. Donald Dayton might have helped but probably not. The entire work is blind to the fact that the very term "evangelical" is fundamentally problematic and probably useless. The imprecision this clouds the absolute value of this otherwise helpful text.

This book contains an impressive number and range of essays in honor of Kenneth S. Kantzer. The largest number are by evangelicals, but essays by Gordon Kaufman, Rosemary Radford Ruether, John Meyendorff, and John H. Yoder shows the incredible diversity of approaches. My own favorite is the essay by Kevin J. Vanhoozer on relating faith and reason in doing theology. This is a great collection to get a quick overview of diverse contemporary theological methods.

This a helpful book written by practitioner theologians that come from differing persuasions. This is a wonderful text that has a broad and selective representation. In my opinion, the most helpful articles are those by Richard Muller on "The Role of Church History," David Wells, "The Theologian's Craft," and Fred H. Klooster "How Reformed Theologians 'Do Theology' in Today's World." However, there are several other entries worthy of scrutiny. A high regard for Scripture is essential and several of the authors hold that presupposition. This will show you how other have, and how you may engage in doing theology yourself!
