Mike Benson (Author), Jefte Palo (Illustrator). The first couple of volumes in this Moon Knight series were some of the worst comics Marvel published in the 2000s; Charles Huston and David Finch pretty much creating the epitome of grim-and-gritty superhero comics gone wrong. When Mike Benson took over the writing duties, and Finch was phased out for a rotating and steadily improving roster of artists, the book got better. The association is heightened by artist Jefte Palo’s style, evoking Jim Lee and Erik Larsen at their pre-Image best (with a Euro twist), and bringing some absolutely splendid action sequences.

Moon Knight, Volume 5 book. I really liked Jefte Palo's art - it's a good fit for a crime/action story

And now, thanks to Moon Knight, he's a dead man. But the avatar of Khonshu lives on in the form of Jake Lockley - a more laid-back personality who just wants to take a nice, relaxing trip in Mexico. But for him, this means bashing his way through g tournaments, hiring on for a "snatch and grab" on behalf of a rich and well-armed land baron, and going toe-to-toe with a guy named Frank Castle - who the criminal element knows better as the Punisher. AAA never recommended a trip like this, but then again, Moon Knight is no ordinary tourist! Collecting MOON KNIGHT

I read Essential Moon Knight to get acquainted to story because I noticed Mark Texeira was doing some issues of ongoing series and I wanted them.

After getting to know main characters from 'Essential MK' book (Marc, Frenchie, Marc's girlfriend, Bushman, Khonshu) first four trades of ongoing series were good for me because they were kinda homage to earlier stories.

What happens in fifth trade? We got different writer and illustrator and change of direction. Main guy is in Mexico, Frenchie, gang and copter are nowhere to be seen. There is lot of humor and two great new characters, lucha libre style hitmen. Art is good, although much different than Texeira's.

Book has an amount of gore that is unnecessary, but also has good dynamics and decent story. If you were fan of Ennis' Hitman, get this.

Moon Knight has always shown darkness despite his bright colors, but here it is combined with that grim angle he has developed by past unworthy experiences.

You want raw ? This book is it.

The final volume of the 2006 Moon Knight series, bro! This last chapter chronicles the death of a courageous man named Marc Spector and the rise to a man many knew as Jake Lockley. The ghost of Khonshu still haunts even Jake (in various forms) as he flees to Mexico to get away from the trouble Marc was in while residing in the States. After winning a boxing match to make some scratch, he's hired by a man named Alcantara to find his daughter who was kidnapped. However, the mission doesn't go as planned as the monster of a father only wants his daughter so he can kill her to show his Russian allies that he's as cold and heartless as he seems. When Alcantara gets word, he hires two wrestlers/mercenaries named the Zapata Brothers (who say `bro' way too much) to hunt down Jake and the girl Carmen. At the same time, a ravenous monster named Toltec that is ripping Alcantara's men to pieces at every turn and not only that, but the Punisher's in town to fulfill his own mission! Jake must get the girl to safety, fight off the wrestle-maniacs, keep away from an ancient killer, keep out of Castle's way, and stop Alcantara all without Marc Spector. Khonshu takes a back seat this time as Moon Knight takes over to get the job done; and boy what a job it is!

This final volume doesn't give much in terms of closure but it's a decent ending to the series. Marc is dead and it's up to Jake and Moon Knight to save an innocent girl from her father's killer intent. Jake meets some colorful characters on the way and runs into Toltec as well. The writing's gritty as is the art and the story's not vital to the overall Moon Knight world but it's a good one to read. Definitely not the best the 2006 series has to offer but a good one to get in to if you're reading the series at all.

First an obvious note: Buy 1-4 first and this one will make more sense.
Moon Knight is one of the most complex anti-heroes out there. Is he crazy? Is he truly the Avatar of a god? Is he the dupe of an alien? One thing is for sure, he tries to do the right thing, and he suffers hell for it.
This is the comic that made me return to comics as an adult.
