Applegeeks Volume 1: Freshman Year Paperback – May 26, 2009. by Ananth Panagariya (Author), Mohammad F. Haque (Illustrator). Book 1 of 2 in the Applegeeks Series. I've been a fan of Applegeeks for a few years now and when I heard thymous (Ananth Panagariya ) and ster (Mohammad F. Applegeeks Volume 1: Freshman Year. Entirely consistent with the first volume and lives up to the great quality of that first volume. The extra chronicling the creation of the Eve miniature is great. I loved seeing what went into creating this on your side.

Jayce, an introspective writer, and Hawk, an excitable artist and inventor, have unofficially taken up residence in the home of sweet and thoughtful Alice and hard-drinking, hard-smoking, hard-hitting Gina. The foursome's busy trying to figure out what to do with the rest of their lives, and how the heck to fit their college classes in around marathon video-game sessions, visits to the comic shop, and offbeat road trips, but when Hawk gets fed up with constantly striking out with women and decides to create the perfect girlfriend in his basement lab, passing classes suddenly becomes the least of the group's worries! If Hawk's project is a success, will his creation be content with being the perfect girlfriend, or will she have dreams of her own? And...uh...how many more things is she going to blow up?

I learned about Applegeeks through another web comic, Penny Arcade, and was curious about it so one day when I came across this book, I decided to see what it was about. The quality of the artwork and the writing is VERY good, but unfortunately the cover broke off as soon as I opened it up, and the pages come unglued from the binding immediately upon turning them. Now, instead of a book, I have a collection of loose sheets of (admittedly very high-quality printed) paper with comics on them. The comics are of course perfectly enjoyable, but the book itself is awful. I hope their volume 2 improved on this.

My advice: definitely buy this book. Just be aware, after you read it once, it will totally fall apart on you. Best to read it over a table surface or something.

I've been a fan of Applegeeks for a few years now and when I heard @ananthymous (Ananth Panagariya [The Golden Quill]) and @hawkster (Mohammad F. Haque [Art-Monkey]) announce a dead-tree volume, I nearly dissolved into a puddle of nerdy excitement. I couldn't believe I was going to own my favorite era of AG! On dead trees, no less! Needless to say, the pre-order button was mashed.

Printed on good quality paper that feels better on the digits than some other popular works in graphic fiction can claim. The inking is masterful in this one. The color range is very wide, and the tones are simply wonderful.
The comics themselves are worth the (very reasonable) price of the book. Sure you could just "next-button marathon" them from the Applegeeks site, but then you wouldn't get the creator's commentary on EVERY SINGLE COMIC. You'd also miss all the great stand-alone art you didn't realize you loved until you see it again. Value-added? I think so. There's even more content than that, but you'll just have to buy it to see the distilled awesome in action.

Can't wait for volume 2.

Full color glossy book for less than the cost of an arm and a leg. You're not getting a few pages for $20 here, you're getting a ton of pages for much much less. The writing and art are excellent, grin-worthy, and enjoyable. Even though I've been reading the comic for years, when this arrived I sat down and read it cover-to-cover. It's great for both current webcomic readers and casual comic readers that just want something to do for an afternoon.

This was a great purchase. Some of the beginning images were a little fuzzy, but they got better along the way. I've enjoyed their site immensely over the past years. A plus is that they are not into Fan Service which to me puts them at a higher class altogether. Kudos! You can see the enjoyment they have with the comic reflect on their work! May they keep on going for many years to come! I've already have their second book in pre-order!

I purchased this book so I would have an excuse to catch up on the older issues of AG that i missed. Now I can enjoy AG anywhere without having to be plugged into the Matrix. If your an AG fan this book is a must have. Every Issue is accompanied by commentary from Ananth and pages from Hawks sketchbook are included in the back. The extras alone make this book a must have.

The web comic has been great, and has great art and writing. Now with the aid of Dark Horse it is available in print which is great for sharing, and taking with you. The book also features additional art not available on the web comic, as well as commentary for each comic by Hawk and Ananth. If you like the comic, you won't be disappointed with getting the book. It is well worth it.

I like the stories in this comic. They are not things to laught out load to, but I somehow feel entertained reading them. The bad thing about this book is that after reading 30 pages, it started to fall apart. Thus I am left with a collection of loose glossy pages.
A nice addition to my bookshelves. The comments and bonus are nicely done. Overall quality is great, even though you need to be extra careful with the pages to avoid them to detach.
