The vintage-comic-strip renaissance has also brought back a lot of charming oddities. That didn’t make for great art, but it’s a ridiculously clever gimmick.

Gustave Verbeek's "The Upside-Downs", published in The New York Herald between 1903-1905, was the . Escher of cartoon strips! Pure genius, a visual wonder, extremely difficult to create (especially weekly), quaint and both simple and complex simultaneously. The cartoons could be read right-side up, and then again upside-down - the characters, scenery, et. are transformed before your eyes, akin to an optical illusion, and the story continues. In other words, there are really 12 different cartoons and captions within only six panels. Amazes children and adults alike!

No question, the man was a genius. His ability to change Lady Lovekins into Old Man Muffaroo, and vice versa, merely by turning a page upside down was, and remains, an entertaining tour de force. As a child, I enjoyed his cartoons in an earlier black-and-white book, and, as an adult, am delighted to find this wonderful reprint, in color, with lots of examples of his other work.

I was dismayed when the book arrived because there was no title on the spine, only a yellow rubberized material. Convinced that the copy was defective. I reached the owner of the publishing company who assured me that it was an intentional decision by the designer who wanted the outside of the book as unique as the material inside.

For lovers of classic American comic strips from the start of the 20th century, this beautifully designed book is a must-have! Each epsiode of the incredible adventures of Muffaroo and Lovekins is in fact two pages in one, due to a smart gimmick; at the end of the page you must turn the book upside-down to read on Every panel now shows a different scene, and you can read the story on to the end. It's a funny, inventive and higly original way of comic storytelling, never seen then or since.
Also present is a selection of the less familiar strips of the brilliant Verbeek.
One minor point: the size of the book can be somewhat of a problem for people with modest bookcases.

Nice compilation of Verbeek's comics. (Read the comic right-side up, then flip it over to read the rest of the story.)

Finally a book written for us in the Southern Hemisphere. So often authors completely neglect their audience in the Southern Hemisphere and release books that can only be conveniently read in the Northern Hemisphere. I welcome this initiative and look forward to seeing editions of Northern classics converted in a similar way to cater to the needs of those of us who are clinging to the bottom of the planet.

I first learned about the art work of Gustave Verbeek while reading the Colossal Book of Mathematics by Martin Gardner. You first read the stories across and then turn them upside down for the conclusion. This collection is out of print and therefore hard to find at bookstores.
