I found the official Microsoft Press book to be the best of the bunch, but the Exam Cram comes in at a close 2nd. I've bought 6, yes 6 study guides for this exam and they have all fallen way short...with the exception of this and the MS book. I found the first half of this book to be excellent. Especially the chapters on Classes and Active X. The sections on ADO and common controls were a bit dry, but nonetheless complete. I've used the Exam Cram books for over 7 exams and I have yet to be disappointed...
I would recommend as a study base: this book, the official MS book along with some testing simulations to ensure a good score on the exam.

I had used Microsofts Desktop Applications with VB6 and Transcender before this book. I also had quite a bit of hands on experience using VB before taking the Microsoft text. My first time out I failed getting only a 600 and needing 714 to pass the test. I then crammed with this book for about 20+ hours one weekend and took the test on a Monday morning. I easily passed the test with a 757 after that.
This book will not stand alone to get you past the exam. However if you just need a little extra boost it worked out great for me.

This book has a lot of good info in it. Alone, it is a good VB reference book. However, it has more info than could possibly be on the exam. Therefore you spend too much time learning what might be on the exam and not enough time on the exact exam material.
In the end, I used the Microsoft Mastering Series CD-ROM, Transcender, and MSDN. This was just the right amount of reference material to help me pass. I would spend my money on those, and not on this book to pass 70-176.
Also, I used the same materials to pass 70-175.

I used the vb 6.0 distributed exam cram book previously and thought it was excellent. So when I needed a study guide for the desktop exam this was my first choice. However I was quite dissapointed. The previous reviewers who stated that this book is full of errors are quite correct. I found many errors in questions and comments. What wasn't errors was often misleading. Overall I was quite dissapointed.

I bought the book based on the reviews placed here in Amazon. As a developer with plenty of experience in VB(6) I figured it would be good enough to help me "get an idea" of whats on the test. I didn't think the technical errors that other people mentioned would be a big problem and that I would spot them right away.
If you are considering the book along the same line of thought that I had, pass it by. Do not buy it. Even though I was warned, I was completely amazed by the amount of technical inaccuracies spread throughout the book. Common properties are mislabled, important methods left out, and some of the info given on ADO is simply false.
The book did little to shed any light on what was actually the focus of exam topics, so it provided no help in that department either. The book is much more focused on getting people just learning VB for the first time up to speed.
Finally, the author suggests that people preparing to take the exam 'look on the internet and search for braindumps made by people who previously took the exam'. I was quite shocked to see this as using these braindumps are considered cheating by MicroSoft. In other words, the book suggests using illicit material provided by people who break the NDA agreement on taking the exam.
If you are an experienced developer, look elsewhere.

I took the VB Desktop (70-176) exam sometime ago and missed it by a hair. Using my experience and a different guide (New Riders MCSD VB 6, my review is on this site) I figured I'd research some extra material.
This book I discovered in my local city library by a fluke so I figured hey great I can use this and it will cost nothing. Now having read it here's what I can say.
The books organization seems fine, but it condenses too much information in a very unuseful manner. It reads like a very bad MSDN. Sections in the book talk about stuff that you will never even see on the exam. However I was glad to finally find out what the hell Zorder was for.
Secondly the book is missing things on the exam that you will need. There is absolutely no mention of Visual Source Safe and how to use it. You need to know VSS for the exam and this book doesn't even cover it. Also too many of the topics are lightly covered ecspecially the section on deployment which is a HUGE part of the exam.
Thirdly, there are practically no exercises for you to do which is bad, cause that's the only way you will really let a concept sink in and actually 'get it'.
What I did find good was the questions, which I can honestly say were TOUGH! The exam at the end was a good and extrememly hard and made me think (and it pissed me off).
I haven't taken the exam again yet, but I can say that the only thing I got out of the book were the sample questions. If I pass it again it won't be because of this book.
So overall I am EXTREMELY glad I did not have to buy this, and I can recommend solidly that you don't either.

I just passed the VB Desktop 70-176 yesterday using only this book and the transcenders with a score of 87%. The book does not cover _everything_ you need to know to get 100% on the exam (for instance I don't recall reading anything about bootstrap which may or may not be on the exam or any mention of CD autorun when deploying an app).
Nonetheless if your only goal is to pass the exam this book offers a sound foundation. My experience with VB was somewhat limited and I scoured this book about 3 times, then the night before ran through the transcenders. I would have guessed I'd of gotten low 70's without transcenders to fill in some of the holes this book leaves.
While keeping in mind that this book is not totally extensive on the ocassional detail I would certainly recommend it to somebody looking to pass the exam.
