Overall i think this is an average book. You can tell it was written by several people, because the first part is very boring, then towards the middle the author put a lot of personal opinion and experience, then it ends very boring. Its like 3 different people wrote the book, each with a different viewpoint. The subject matter is too boring and many things arent covered in enough depth.

For example, on page 361 it's talking about DSP resources, then in the last paragraph all of a sudden talks about meet-me conferences. The first time i read the book i missed this, as i understand dsp resources well. The part about meet-me conferences should have been a seperate section. I also dont like that meet-me conferences are sometimes referred to in the book as meetme conferences. If youre studying and you search the PDF on meet-me, you will miss a lot of stuff. They should have used terms more consistant, but again if several people wrote the book its understandable you would have differences like that.

My recommendation is to read this twice - first time overview, second time in detail with the questions at end of each chapter. Also install CUCM in a VM and use it along with the book. Watch CBT's. Dont rely on any 1 resource; instead use the book, the questions, CBT's, and cisco's SRND for more in depth. Focus on technologies such as meet-me conferences. The test is very hard take extra time studying. I spent almost 2 months in total and passed.

I have been working in the telecommunications engineering field for almost ten years now. I never bothered to get the CCNA Voice or CCVP Voice and now that it's CCNP Voice since a few years ago I decided why not for career progression. First, I would like to say that I have quite a bit of first hand knowledge since I work with CUCM, Unity Express, and all the other add-ons like CUPC and such. This book does a great job at introducing you to CUCM 8 features but fails miserably at making it interesting. I love the voice realm but this book will put you to sleep due to it's excessive wordiness. On top of this issue, some of the statements are wrong which is strange since both author's have extensive experience in the field. I think part of the problem is the CCIE R&S guy with 3 years of voice experience was the one reviewing the work prior to publication so the quality control is out the window so to speak. Sorry but three years doesn't make you an expert in the field. One example is in the very first chapter when it talks about the licensing manager. Specifically, this manager runs on every sub and pub in the cluster but when it comes to the end of the chapter review, you have to pick between the two. Now technically, you can just use the subscriber for the licensing manager but again, technically this isn't right and will confuse the reader. These kinds of things are littered throughout the book and can make studying for the CIPT1 cert irritating since you don't know which is right, the original text, the summary, or the review question. As always, a lab, CBT Nuggets, and at least one other source is recommended anyways for cisco certifications.

I purchased this to help prepare for the Cisco certification exam. I work with CUCM on a daily basis, so the book was primarily to focus on the "Cisco answers" and test preparation. The book did help (I passed).

I have two complaints about the book. The first complaint is with the editing, it is horrible. Even after registering the book and getting the errata, the mistakes, both typo's and technical, are all over the book. One chapter has ten review questions, but the answer key only has answers for the first four. There are errors too numerous to list.

The second is a minor complaint with the author's writing style. He interjects too many personal opinions which are irrelevant to the subject matter. The one comment that sticks out is regarding SIP where the author compares the longevity as a protocol to ATM, implying that it probably won't last despite the incredible rate of adoption.

I believe the book is necessary as a test preparation guide for the CIPT1 exam, but the editing really needs to be fixed. I would not recommend the book for anything other than a study guide.

I use Cisco Press for all my exam prep and have been pretty happy with all the books. Until this one. It still gets me most of what I need to prepare for the exam, although anyone who's gone through the voice (or other) tracks knows the exams take a bit more prep than just reading through the book once. The problem with this book is tons of errors. They range from technical to typos to duplicated text/images. There is also a lack of consistency throughout the book. I imagine that's due to two authors. There is a lot that's not very clear and it's a lot of information stuffed into this book. It would definitely help if you have access to CUCM and other hardware while you go through this.

I purchased the ebook version of this book, which I must admit was very nice. The ease of access to this book is about the only thing I like about it. I too find that it is full of errors both gramatically as well as some technical errors. It is also poorly edited as it seems to really jump around a great deal and can be hard to follow at times. As far as the depth and detail of information, I find it shallow to say the least.

As a quick review study guide this book would not be bad, as a study source I would highly recommend you augment it with some videos from CBT or INE. I don't think you could pass with this book along.

Long winded with lots of general information and few specifics

It is a good reference book if you already have some experience in CUCM. Otherwise, it is not easy to follow.
