Learn HTML...on the Mac begins with a brief explanation of what HTML is and then moves immediately to the first session. The book is divided into four main sessions--Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon with bonus evening sessions. The author throws a large amount of information at you--literally a semester's worth "in a weekend." All you really need to use this book is a text editor (like SimpleText), a browser (Explorer 4 or later or Navigator 4 and up) and a CD Rom drive. You will copy a tutorial file from the included CD so you can more easily follow along with the sessions in the book. The "lessons" are reasonably easy to follow and are illustrated with "screen shots." There are eight appendices including a quick reference guide, working with style sheets, and with graphics. I was disappointed that the graphics section was geared toward using Photoshop (trial version on the CD) and not AppleWorks. Although I think the author uses a little hyperbole--eg. in the 2001 job market I can't believe knowing HTML will "advance your career." Also Callihan says after completing the book "you should be able to say I know HTML with confidence." To me "know HTML with confidence" would be the ability to write code for a web site without referring back to the book. But overall you could easily use this book and have a simple web site up and be able to understand some code "in a weekend."

As a Mac user, the programs included on the CD and about half the book proved useless. You can download the graphic and template files from their webpage. Otherwise, the book proved very useful and did indeed teach me, a complete novice, the basics of html in a weekend. I found some parts of the book to be difficult to follow.

I ordered Learn HTML on the Mac In a Weekend and I received the PC version of the book instead. I have the PC version of HTML books already, I though it would be great to have a book I could use from the Mac perspective.

i bought this book to learn HTML and it has done a great job so far, easy to follow and very understandable from a beginner to someone that might be looking to learn a bit more than just basics.

This 3rd edition is very different from the previous edition, which I skimmed in a bookstore. In this 3rd edition the author NO LONGER uses pre-packaged software (FrameIt and WebForms) to create frames and web forms, instead, you are taught using pure HTML, which is the way it should. I am somewhat new to HTML and wanted a book to teach me HTML in the shortest time possible. I completed this book in a weekend just like the title says, and found it to have a very personal yet concise style of writing that put me at ease with the subject. The author alerts you to many pitfalls and has excellent tips along the way. If a sentence brought up a question in my mind, sure enough, it was answered in the next sentence or two. This edition now comes with a short but excellent intro on Cascading Style Sheets and points you to sources on the web for more complete info...

I bought this book assuming I would learn HTML and I did to a small extent. There absolutly nothing wrong with the way Callihan instructs the reader, in fact he writes to people who have just purchased a computer or a modem. However the most advanced HTML programming learnt in the book is creating tables, stuff which can be learnt on-line without a hassle. For forms and frames however he just teaches you how to use shareware programs included on the CD and not how to do the pure HTML code. This book also includes a tutorial on Paint Shop Pro and a nice little reference for HTML code which I liked. The book has it's high points but is intendend for beginners, and if you know how to program advanced tables in HTML, stay the hell away from this book.

I do not need many words to review this book. If you are thinking of designing a web site, or just want to know how those neat web sites are put together, than this is the book for you! It is written in such a way that average computer users can actually at the end of a week-end design a good looking web site. It explains everything in detail and has a great CD as an added bonus. Reading this book to me was like eating peanuts, I could not stop.
This is the first book I've ever purchased on HTML - and it's still my most used. Though I learned it over many weekends, it was still just as effective. The lessons are the right length, and everything is explained very simply - but without oversimplifying or boring you. The files and (demo)programs on the disc are awesome. I still use some of the backgrounds from the disc today! And to dissagree with what another rewiewer wrote, you CAN learn how to make great, and partly complex webpages with this book. And yes, it is a beginners' book. But that's why it's called LEARN HTML in a Weekend; but like I said, I still use it as a reference book today. The extra lessons on working with graphics and other media are also great. If you are interested in learning HTML, or you've tried another book, and it didn't work for you, buy this book!
