In "Photoshop to HTML", Nettuts+ editor Jeffrey Way takes you through the entire process of converting a design from Photoshop into a complete HTML/CSS website! But this is NOT just a tutorial book. It also comes packed with extras! You also get a directory of Photoshop, HTML and CSS files for you to use as you work through the book AND a series of 14 screencasts covering the whole project from beginning to end. This book is for anyone who has an elementary understanding of HTML and CSS. You should be familiar with HTML tags and the most common CSS properties. Some of the topics covered in the book are as follows: Different methods for slicing a PSD. Create semantic mark-up, and learn how this HTML relates to the original PSD. How to utilize techniques, such as background replacement and sprite generation. Use custom fonts with Cufon font replacement. The differences between absolute and relative positioning. How to compensate for the dreaded Internet Explorer 6. Take advantage of advanced CSS3 features. How to take advantage of a variety of helpful browser extensions to expedite your coding. Utilize the jQuery library to add a touch of interactivity.

This is a great book to learn how to make websites out of PSD or photoshop documents. In order to complete the projects on the book you need:

1. Photoshop
2.Dreamweaver or other free alternatives are(sublime text2, coda, text wrangler) I personally prefer dreamweaver and sublime text 2
3.Basic HTML knowledge
4.Basic Css knowledge

The book assumes that you already know how to use all of these. It might be possible to do the projects on the book without html, css and photoshop knowledge but the explanations on the book on some chapters are brief not very clear and if you dont know the basic tools mentioned before you will get lost. IF you are a begginer then i recommend that you download the screencast. A cd is not included with the book but it's needed to work the book. The total download size of all the videos and files and working files is around 2Gigs. They are videos made by Jeffrey the author of the book in order to guide you to the steps of creating the website. They are very helpful and clearly explain the process needed to create the website. The videos where especially helpful on the 2nd chapter which talks about slicing documents. The 2nd chapter is horribly written and explained so the videos are there to clear up any doubts and you can see the whole process of slicing the psd on photoshop which cleared all my doubts.

My biggest complaint on this book is that i would like to follow everything step by step on the book and not have the author assume that we already know what he is doing I think that this is specially true for the 2nd chapter of slicing. I guess im used to books like Dreamweaver Digital classroom CS5 and photoshop digital classroom CS5 Where they explain everything step by step and also include a CD with videos to clarify doubts. This book comes with downloadable videos to clarify doubts but you shouldn't need to rely on the videos to understand the book. The book should be the only resource you should need but with this book it's not the case.

In conclusion this book gives you a glimpse of how professionals currently develop websites at a very. I am extremely satisfied with the book, I think that the Website examples are excellent and that the explanations on the book have a lot of room for improvement. The book seems like it was rushed, and mere 152 pages do not justify the price of the book, but I highly recommend it.I havn't seen any other books on this specific subject. I believe that book does well on its own little niche

I rate it 4 stars
I bought this book to help me use photoshop for building websites and it helped me when I needed it. Although I use a different format now for websites, this book helped as advertised.
I thought this was a pretty good way to explain a way to design websites based on PSD graphics. It's a short book and assumes you know HTML and CSS.
Freaky Hook
The author obviously did the screencasts first and then went back and did the book... poorly. Book doesn't match the final HTML/CSS files at all and many steps that are covered in the screencasts are glossed over or not covered at all in the text.

The quality of the text is so poor that I can't in good confidence say that you're actually paying for a book at all -- you're paying for the screencasts. The screencasts are well thought out and very expressive. The author clearly knows what he's doing and explains most of the oddities and tricks very well. In fact, he works a little TOO fast and I found myself having to pause the screencasts frequently to catch up with him. However, that observation doesn't really have much weight on my review as a whole. Regardless, the screencasts and included files cover the subject matter very well and you'll come away from them well-informed and with a valuable skill. Not too shabby at all!

However, the fact of the matter is that you're buying half a product. The text might be useful for reference, but, in reality, it's absolutely useless without the screencasts. Try following along with the book and you'll quickly find yourself lost and confused somewhere in the CSS chapter (that's when the text starts skipping huge chunks of information).

So why do the half-arsed text? I guess so he could sell the thing on Amazon or in a bookstore, as there's a huge dearth of authoritative materials on this subject on bookshelves and in general. In this environment, having a spot on the bookshelves would be quite valuable, I daresay. While there are lots of similar tutorials up around the net on this topic, paid, professional grade training materials are practically non-existent for this important skill. Pay attention, authors: We need more quality materials on this topic!

So where does this product stand? This could have been a great, authoritative treatment of an important skill. There's a lot of information that could have been included in the book as a reference. Books can be a lot longer, give an in-depth treatment of a topic and include more information. However, the multimedia format (files/text/screencast) is not leveraged effectively here since the text is so lacking. As it is, it's just another series of screencasts like you might find on YouTube. An excellent series of screencasts, make no mistake! You'll learn a lot! Just don't count on the text for anything useful.
