Based on the reviews, I thought this book would be of help upgrading my gaming computer, but it was just way too basic. Most of the book had to do with adding external devices like printers, mice and external hard drives. The sections on adding internal components like memory and video cards were very short and did not address any of the issues I had. Maybe they would be useful for working on a very basic computer, but they were quite inadequate for installing high-end components that needed special handling. I ended up returning the book and hiring a tech to help me out.

Easy to understand for us newbs and lots of illustrations.

I volunteer for a charity that takes donated old PCs from companies, gets them working, and gives them to people who can't afford to buy computers. I bought the book for ideas. The book was useful; there was lots of stuff I needed reminding about. But it tries to help both people with 386s and people with Pentium IIIs at the same time, and it's too wide a range. Also, it needs re-editing (e.g. a reference to a serial printer later in the chapter wasn't there, and there were other minor goofs as well). It probably really needs to be two books: one for fixing up old PCs and one for Pentiums and later.

The book only contained a couple of sentences that pertained to my problem. It might be a good book if it happens to address a problem that you have.

I recommend this book for new commers like myself. I got it because Im making working on PCs a new hobby. It teaches you the basics for updating different components to your system such as mem, graphic card, power supply, and hard drives. I will use this bood to play with my old PC and to learn the basic before I get into the more advance book. I repeat its really for beginners.

We bought this for our teenager. Seems like their compy is always having problems. SO now he has a way of repairing it. As a senior this year, he is thinking of computer studies in college. This book seems to have a start of info that he may need and pictures as well.
