Leen Ammeraal received his MSc degree in mathematics in 1971 at Delft University of Technology while working as a programmer and technical mathematician in industry since 1960. He then joined Hogeschool Utrecht to teach mathematics and computer science until his retirement in 1998. He has written 14 books in Dutch and 12 in English on programming and computer graphics.

C++ for Programmers 3e book. The significance of this for programmers is that it offers more flexibility allowing them to shift to object-oriented programming if and when they feel the need to do so.

It is the first book that I have read that makes STL quickly usable by working programmers" Francis Glassborow, Chair of The Association of C & C++ Users (ACCU) STL for C++ programmers Leen Ammeraal The Standard Template Library (STL) provides many useful and generally applicable programming tools. This book combines reference material and a well-paced tutorial to get you past the basics quickly. Small, complete programs illustrate the key STL features such as containers, algorithms, iterators and function objects. A section is devoted to the new string data type.

The significance of this for programmers is that it offers more flexibility.

One of the attractive aspects of C++ is that it offers goodfacilities for object-oriented programming (OOP), but, as a hybridlanguage, it also supports procedural programming. The significance of this for programmers is that it offers moreflexibility allowing them to shift to object-oriented programmingif and when they feel the need to do so. In this regard, C++differs from some purely object-oriented languages, such asSmalltalk, Eiffel and Java. This book offers practical guidance onhow to programme in both styles. The C++ language and its standard library have gone through a goodmany improvements and extensions during their evolution. This thirdedition has therefore been completely revised in accordance withthe C++ language revision, which is embodied in the ANSI/ISO C++Standard. For example, the new, important type string is used throughout thebook and the Standard Template Library (STL) is introduced toreaders at an early stage and discussed in more detail later on.All example programs and the solutions to the exercises can bedownloaded from the website. http://home.wxs.nl/ ~ammeraal/Solutions for some of these exercises can be found in the appendix.

... Some exercises assume math abilities and are hard to follow. New terms are introduced without definitions. Syntax is usually shown but without examples. Solution to exercises require knowledge of C++ not yet covered in the text. Better texts are available.

The problems after every chapter are really good, you have to be smart to solve them, and it is a great pleasure. And the book is very clear.
