The Practical Distiller was first published in 1809 when spirit distillation was legal in the United States. This book has some unique stories about some of the old distilleries, and explains many things that were no doubt helpful to the brewers of that day. Section one discussed yeast, how to know when it is good or bad, how to renew it when it is sour, and the best yeast for daily use. Very interesting look at the past as far as alcoholic beverages are concerned. This is not a DIY guide to making whisky. If your looking for that look elsewhere. If you have knowledge and experience distilling then this book could be very useful to you.

The art and science of distillate has not changed past the fundamentals over the last two hundred years. This book proves that. The same steps today which turns starch into sugar and sugar into alcohol are the same from 1809. If you can get past the language barrier and understand what the author is saying, this is an excellent guide for distillation of spirits. Save for a few modern adjustments, like no need to make your own yeast or mash in a oak tun or fire the still with straw, this books is very true to how it's done. Some whiskey makers still use these methods today, such as Jameson or Aberlour. If a young distiller is trying to find the old ways of making spirits, to capture the true hearts, read this book.

For those with a general interest in distilling, this is an informative book though the language can be a bit archaic. This gives a good historical look on past practices in the distillation of spirits, but should not be read by those looking for modern distillation methods and recipes. Having said that, there is a lot of good practical and historical information contained in this easy to read tome, and I enjoyed reading it.

This is an historical book related to the farm distilling in early America. It gives great insight to the practices and beliefs of that era. Times have changed and it gives a nice glimpse of how far we have evolved in the art of distilling.

From the very beginning with the Preface you can tell the writer lacks basic knowledge of writing and must have sat down and tried to switch out words to make themselves *seem* intelligent. Sadly, it didn’t work and rather being informational it’s much more like listening to someone try and toot their own horn while trying to put down other people to make themselves feel better.

A bit hard to draw out practical advice. If you have a specific need you might find it here but not for a beginner

Although this book might have some value to some from a historical perspective, it is very hard to read and offers very little help to the novice. If you must buy this book, make sure you get the (much cheaper) paperback version. But really, even then, it's not worth the paper it's printed on.
A reprint of an antique book about distilling. Useful for historic interest but I needed something modern.
