Ever have a family member who needed to make dietary changes... but who was utterly opposed to eating vegetarian or vegan? This is the cookbook for you!

I have *never* had a complaint due to the recipes not having meat in them. No comments about how humans weren't meant to eat like rabbits. And the lowered blood cholesterol and other side effects from the diet change (no claims being made, just testimony and comments from the doctor) were well worth the small amount of time and effort needed to eat healthier... and vegan!

----

Beyond that, this book is THE SOURCE for great recipes to both make and utilize seitan (wheat gluten/wheat meat). I believe this book was the starting point for the recipes developed by the Field Roast Grain Meat Company.

However, those recipes are less than 1/4 of the book, and a previous reviewer is factually inaccurate in claiming that 75% of the recipes utilize wheat meat as a component.

If you're open to anything that will reduce and remove animal products from your diet, and from the diets of those around you, then this is a great book.

If you aren't invested in people becoming vegan in the "right way," but are just interested in a great cookbook, then this is a great book.

However, if you object to seitan/wheat gluten, and/or feel that vegetarianism and veganism shouldn't incorporate fake meats on principle, then this might not be the book for you.

Also... there have been a few people who have been surprised at the inclusion of gluten in the cookbook, in spite of the book's description. Here's the relevant part, for those who skimmed over it:

"Simply Heavenly! is jam-packed with vegan recipes, including basic recipes for using wheat gluten to make un-chicken and un-beef. American favorites are made vegan, including Unchicken Noodle Soup and Barbecue Unchicken, and there are plenty of recipes for beans, grains, lentils, and vegetables."

This cookbook tends to be difficult to find, but if you want to prepare vegan faux-meat meals, there's simply no better cookbook. Burke's marinades are clever and obviously honed, and really live up to his promises.
Beyond his gluten techniques, all the other sections are great, too, and quite a few of the recipes are very simple and fast to prepare, which for me is a very important factor in purchasing a cookbook.
One important distinction is that while some vegan cookbooks embrace the view that vegan cuisine is fundamentally different from omnivorous cuisine, this cookbook is something of the opposite. Much of its focus is on using vegan foods to emulate meat, dairy, and eggs.
That's great, and I'm often in just the mood for the BBQ gluten (which is a spot-on match for good barbeque, incidentally) or any of his other great meat substitutes. But it's kind of a novelty, at some point, and so it's not one of those cookbooks for which I could say, "This is the only cookbook I ever use!" or such.
Still, that's not much of a detraction. Sure, sometimes I have to turn to another cookbook for what I want, but *Simply Heavenly* covers many areas, and it's the superlative for all of them. Put another way: I have never been disappointed with a recipe from this cookbook.
If you can find a copy of this, snatch it up quickly. It's inexpensive, contains great information, and fills what would otherwise be a very notable gap in my cookbook collection.

This book is simply heavenly! lol Seriously! It's absolutely amazing. The book is filled with vegan recipes, has faux meat recipes, "nice cream" recipes, even has a dog/cat food recipe that's vegan! Some of the recipes aren't very specific.. Like there was one for a Thai dish that didn't specify which vegetables to use, but I guess the author wanted to allow some flexibility & imagination. Overall, I love this book. I've purchased 2 of them from amazon. I gave one of them to my rabbi & he & his wife use it all the time. The recipes have helped with their blood pressure & diabetes & stuff. It's got a wonderful variety of recipes, with 1400+ to choose from. You've got Cajun foods, Asian foods, Southern style foods, desserts, faux meats, soups, salads, breads, various recipes for vegan 'eggs', and like I mentioned before, even a recipe for pet food! Even if you had to pay 70+ dollars for the book, I'd recommend buying it.

Just keep an eye out for it on Amazon. I bought my second copy from here for like 25.00. :)

I first heard of this cookbook through a friend who had sent me a recipe. When I was provided with the title from where it came from it took a bit of a search, but Amazon had it all along. There's over 1400 recipes here. Some are easy, some are a little more time intensive. With that many recipes, there aren't any photo's to accompany the majority of items or the book would be as thick as a couple of World Book Encyclopedias. Nevertheless, you will find dishes from Shepherd's Pie to Shrimp, all made using vegan ingredients and flavored appropriately. This is a cookbook for those who want to stick close to their familiar food items and want to turn them into vegan versions. The collection spans the gamut of culinary cultures and just may end up as the last vegan cookbook you will ever need.
Scream_I LOVE YOU
great book! the amounts are a bit large, so you might want to halve the recipes. Some people have complained about the use of white flour, MSG etc, but a good sub for MSG is a 1/2 tsp of veg boulion. As for white flour - there is organic unbleached flour, and once in a while it won't kill you - substitute whole flour and be peace. Great 'everyday' receipes, which are excellent for cooking for people who are not vegans, or for taking to parties where people are not vegans - that way, you are assured of something to eat and they are turned on that veganism isn't 'brown mushy food'. Anybody who wasn't a vegan from childhood is going to crave old standbys once in a while - mac and cheese, ribs, pizza or the Sunday roast -and they're here.
