This is a wonderful book, and an excellent kitchen resource regardless of your experience level in the kitchen. The book contains a dizzying array of recipes in every conceivable category, and is well organized and illustrated. The illustrations, in fact, are what truly set this book apart: not only are the dishes well presented, explained, and photographed, but the steps involved in preparing the dishes are generally photographed to make it crystal clear how to do all required tasks.
Earlier in my life, I was a Chef at a high dollar restaurant serving mostly beef, so I was largely acquainted with the techniques associated with preparing most meats (and agree with the techniques used here), but I have never been especially knowledgeable about baking (and some other things). This book made it easy to learn the exact steps involved along the way to making every dish contained herein. I was especially enthused with the photographs taken at major preparation steps and decision points. This let me get it right the first time without having a recipe that was almost, but not quite, perfect.
Any level of cook from very beginner to advanced will love this book. There are dishes ranging from simple to complex (biased toward the simple on average) but all the ones I have made have worked well and tasted great. No kitchen should be without this book!

This is a step above the average food I cook at home. Step by Step instructions and tips are very helpful. I am a good cook and was looking for some more inspiring meals and this has that going for it. I really enjoy this book. Only one draw back so far, I do not care for the binding of the book. After looking through the book for about 2 hours, the back cover was tearing from its binding. So, I took quite sometime and cut the glue and binding from the book, used the paper cutter to cut pages to be all the same, (took off frayed edges after pulling it apart), and placed in a nice 3 ring binder and added separating tabs for the 16 different categories. Happy Meals!

I bought whatever edition back in 1985. Still use it though it's held together by duck tape now. I have no bad experiences with these recipes. Actually I remember I bought it to learn to cook for my girlfriend, and ...... Buyer beware, we got married and kids and..... But seriously, I just bought the latest edition for my daughter, she keeps texting me how do you make that veal thing...Here's the book!

This book should be given to some one that has basic knowledge of the kitchen. For the person that has difficultly boiling water this is not the book for them. If you cannot manage a boiled egg or mac 'n cheese you don't need help with a rack of lamb or risotto.

This book is great for people who are interested in cooking. It is not, however, as "step-by-step" as I was expecting. One my mother got me years ago, from Pillsbury, I believe, was the most "step-by-step" I've ever seen. It was perfect for me, as I truly needed everything spelled out for me. This book assumes you know a few things, lol.

This book has everything. And, as the title says - it tells you how to do everything: Step by Step. It's a great volume of recipes for everything under the sun. It's big, it's comprehensive, and it's helpful with instruction, techniques, and mouth-watering photos. It's great for holiday meals because everything you might want to make is in there. It's also great for everyday stuff and a touch of the exotic. All around textbook for normal everyday cooks.

I bought this because I thought it would be a good "basic" cookbook for young adults on their own. Its far from basic. The recipes are fancy and gourmet. Its a very large book and is not in a ring binder. It has some photos but not as many as or user friendly as BH&G cookbook that i bought at the same time. It will be a book that they won't use everyday/week but in time they may want to create a fancy meal for a challenge.
I initially borrowed a copy of this cookbook from the library and found it so helpful that I decided to purchase a copy. I really like the organization of this cookbook. Many of the recipes are simple and quick which is especially nice for families that do not have all afternoon to prepare dinner.
