I love this cookbook! Of course, I never thought to get any of my Bavarian grandmother's recipes from her before she passed away, so for years, I've sought out great recipes for spatzle, stollen, red cabbage, German potato salad, hearty meat dishes and many others. This book has wonderful recipes. Every large page is filled with lavish photos of the food during the preparation stages and the finished dish!

Too bad, this book isn't available from Amazon itself! It is the best German cookbook I have ever seen, I ordered copies for about everybody for christmas. It shows modern German cooking and old recipes with spectacular pictures. The recipes aren't too fancy or difficult and actually recipes, I have seen and eaten in Germany. Absolutely awesome!

So, my wife bought me this book, because my family is German, my mother is from Germany, my father's parents are from Germany and I really don't have a German cookbook, so she thought I might like it. I have a handful of German recipes that I cook, from my mom and my grandmother, but one that I was really interested in was for rye bread. It is very difficult to get a good rye bread in the states, unless you go to a German deli/bakery. There are plenty of good ryes from some grocery stores, but they are just not the same as a German rye bread. So, I immediately tried the recipe for the sourdough rye in this book and, I will preface this by saying, I have baked a rye bread before, but using a recipe from a different source and although it did not rise like I wanted it too, it turned out ok. This rye? I can use it as a doorstop. I am pretty sure it is the starter. It is too heavy on the rye flour and water ratio. I have made a starter before and this was nothing like those. It just sat there and did nothing. I followed the recipe to a T. Now, I did not use "fresh" yeast, but I did use the equivalent in dry active yeast and I knew from the get-go, this was not going to work. The dough was so thick, it could hardly be kneaded and if I had used my food processor as I do for pizza dough, it would have burned the machine up. As I did it by hand, it was nearly impossible to knead and, although it did rise somewhat before baking, in the oven it did nothing. It is soooo dense, it is nearly impossible to eat. And the flavor is not good at all.... Judging by this recipe, I will give some of the others a try, but so far, very disappointed in this book. I realize, you might say, well you only tried one recipe, but if a bread recipe is this bad, which is harder than anything else in my opinion, then how are the other recipes going to go.....? Not impressed to say the least.
