The Vegetarian (Korean: 채식주의자; RR: Chaesikjuuija) is a South Korean three-part novel written by Han Kang and first published in 2007. Based on Kang's 1997 short story "The Fruit of My Woman", The Vegetarian is set in modern-day Seoul and tells the story of Yeong-hye, a part-time graphic artist and home-maker, whose decision to stop eating meat after a bloody, nightmarish dream about human cruelty leads to devastating consequences in her personal and familial life.

Vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of meat (red meat, poultry, seafood, and the flesh of any other animal), and may also include abstention from by-products of animal slaughter. Vegetarianism may be adopted for various reasons. Many people object to eating meat out of respect for sentient life. Such ethical motivations have been codified under various religious beliefs, as well as animal rights advocacy.

This is a good starter book. I really like the basics section. The problem I had with French cookbooks in general is that they are pretty useless for vegetarians. This book is a really good basic, starter cookbook. But it does assume that you have some prior cooking skills.

I will add more to this review after I have tried some more dishes. I have tried one salad (frisee) and one soup recipe (tomato) so far. I did not have chervil/tarragon etc. So the soup was just OK. But I am sure that a delicate soup would taste better if I had all the ingredients! :) But this book along with Marlene Spieler's book is a good starting point for me to cook french food the 4 times I will this year! :)

EDIT: I gave this book away in a Library dump as I was not using it as my other book. Too simple. She is a Gardener who wrote a cookbook, so it is not really comprehensive. It LOOKS good though!

First checked this book out of the library, then decided to invest in my own copy. The recipes focus on fresh ingredients, for the most part simply prepared so that the flavors come through and sparkle. Much lighter fare than in most French cookbooks I've seen. I appreciate the section on flavored vinegars and oils. An inspiring and beautiful little book!

First of all, every recipe I have tried is absolutely delicious. Doesn't give expected amount of time to prepare, so just read the recipes through before you begin. You will not regret buying this book. The author gives wonderful explanations and suggestions for how to use vinegarettes, sauces, and what to look for in a good olive oil. I can't say enough good things about this book. The author lives part time in France so it's not just someone interpreting French food. Has become my most used cookbook. My husband loves everything I've made too!

This is a lovely cookbook of French vegetarian recipes that look so tempting. I have not cooked any of them as this is a gift for my daughter. The illustrations are beautiful, although I would like to have seen more of them.

I'm not a vegetarian but I have used this book often over the last ten years. Always good and easy, especially if you're entertaining as the food comes out looking like the pictures. My only suggestion is thatI generally add a little acid to the salads, either lemon juice or champagne or rice wine vinegar. I'm giving it as a gift to a friend who's husband only eats vegies at my house.
Mr.Bean
As expected.

So many wonderful recipes, I can't wait to try them all. So far the ones I've tried are absolutely delicious and VERY easy to make. Great as main meals and side dishes.
