The Ration Book Diet is a fascinating book! I love history, and have always especially enjoyed history of the era around WWII. I'll admit, some of them do not sound remotely appetizing (Sardine, Horseradish and Chive Pate anyone?), but many are not only appetizing but downright delicious. Crisp and Crunchy Summer Salad is a quick, easy side dish-perfect for grilling season! There are British classics such as Toad-in-the-Hole and Mixed Berry Trifle

Rationing was a vital part of fighting the Second World War on the home front. The Ministry of Food enlisted the cartoon characters Potato Pete and Doctor Carrot to promote the benefits of fresh fruit, vegetables, and cereals and helped families to make the most of meat, fat, sugar, and dairy products. As a result, the health of the nation soared.

The Ration Book Diet

The Ration Book Diet. In 1939, Britain was preparing for war. As well as building aeroplanes and digging Anderson shelters, this meant managing food supplies for the home front. The Ministry of Food rose to the challenge, introducing rationing, encouraging the nation to dig for victory, and issuing cookbooks and health advice. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Ration Book Diet by Mike Brown and Carol Harris who are experts on the Second World War Home Front and C. J Jackson a freelance food consultant, writer and cook.

This is an interesting book. It really shows how resilient we can be as a people when we have to. It was also interesting how health was improved by following the "Ration Diet" and how it plummeted when people returned to their pre-war eating habits.

An excellent diet for serious social history buffs. (Yes, scholarly types get fat, too!) If you are an anglophile, and/or pinching pennies and pining for comfort type foods as well, this is also your diet. However, be warned that the recipes themselves use UK measures and are definitely slanted towards UK tastes. Had it been otherwise, I would have given it a five star rating.

Crisp and Crunchy Summer Salad is a quick, easy side dish--perfect for grilling season! There are British classics such as Toad-in-the-Hole and Mixed Berry Trifle. Next time you want to whip up a batch of scones, why not try the Oatmeal Scones? My husband loves to hunt, so Irish Stew made with Venison is perfect for us as is the Venison Hot-Pot.

Whether you are a history buff, a bibliophile or anglophile, or just someone who wants to try something new to lose a few pounds, this could be the book for you. Great history and some delicious recipes. It's a winner for me!

I received a copy of this book from Trafalgar Publishing through IPG for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
