Just a great book for easy identification of Britains toy solders on Ebay. Book is inexpensive for toy soldier books yet covers most Britains from 1898-1966 with good descriptions and catalog numbers. I find myself using it allot and have a couple of copies around for quick identification. Color photographs are very detailed and are referenced. The book does not cover the new Britains plastic models much but for the price it works well for the hollow cast lead miniatures'. Keep it by the computer when bidding. It has no price guide but is better illustrated then most price guides are, so use the two together.

This, indeed, is a "collector's guide" to toy soldiers with 127 pages full of color photos of primarily lead toy soldiers up to about 1985. I have found this book invaluable in identifying soldiers that I am interested in buying through Ebay and in identifying toy soldiers at collectors' shows or in my private collection. Not only does this have color photos of rank upon rank of toy soldiers, but there are descriptive passages for each soldier detailing the date of manufacture, what series or boxed set it was issued in, and even notes about quality, availabilty, and originality. Britains lead soldiers are well-presented on about 55 pages , but other makers and materials are also represented: American "Dimestore" soldiers; Mignot and Heyde pieces; German tin "flats"; Timpo knights and G.I.s; composition Elastolin soldiers; John Hill, Crescent, and Cherilea hollow-casts; and "other" modern toy soldiers in metal and painted plastic (though these "others" are represented on only about 4 pages. This is an essential guide for toy soldier collectors and enthusiasts, but also an absolute delight to browse through for anyone who played with toy soldiers as a child. It is amazingly comprehensive. One of the best three or four books in my library dealing with toy soldiers. Highly recommended.
