Rulau in his 1700-1900 book historically breaks down American tokens into these general time periods: Early American. Hard times tokens were made during the "hard times" after President Andrew Jackson shut down the Second Bank of the United States. It is important to note that in the 19th century many of the plantation workers and families lived in the farm they worked on. Latin American tokens were made in all types of base metals and alloys plus plastic, celluloid and bakelite. Unique to Costa Rica were tokens made in paper fashion, either uniface or printed on both sides. Many people call these paper chits.

Latin America at the end of the 20th century. It was the principal trading partner and source of loans, grants, and private investment for almost all countries, and Latin American leaders considered its favour worth having.

This Second Edition catalog is probably the best all in one reference we have for Latin America Tokens. It is much better for Central America and the Caribbean than it is for South American material. It would be better to have individual catalogs for each country but that would take up a lot of room if you could get them all. Many are probably not available for all the countries covered in this one volume. I collect Argentina and it is particularly weak there. It lists hundreds while the catalogs available in Argentina list 1000's of tokens. One other weakness is that this catalog lists personal items with engraved or stamped messages. These are mostly unique and not meant for exchange. They should not have been included or perhaps in a separate section labeled properly. When I go to shows this is one of the books I may carry with me. Not perfect but the best thing going. The publishers Krause/F&W has decided that there will not be a Third Edition as it would not be profitable. I think there is a market for it and it is growing. I still have requests to find a copies of this book for other collectors. It gets harder to find them as time passes.

I have used the first edition for a number of years and this revised edition takes up where it (the first) left off.

This is a wonderful book. It has a great historical information and it can help in investigation about the history of the Latin America countries.
I think that this book is the best about the tokens and the tokens collectors need to read this literature.

An excellent reference for my purposes. Especially the Mexico and Central American sections. I wish there were a lot more Proclamation Tokens in the Bolivia section. The Bolivia section seems like an after thought when compared to other countries, but that's probably just my biased opinion.
I hope the next edition has more on Bolivia.
