I was excited to get this book since it seemed to be exactly what I wanted: a book about embroidering with beads and sequins on fabric (not making bracelets, etc.), and all the reviews were 4 or 5 stars. ... I ended up being disappointed.

An entire chapter (if you can call it a chapter when it's 2 1/2 pages long) is devoted to picking up beads and putting them on your needle. As for the rest of the techniques, it's kind of hit and miss. If you really need a book to walk you through doing a running stitch, then you might find more value in this book than I did. For the price I suppose there's enough in here of value that it's not worth the hassle to return it, though I wouldn't buy it if I had it to do over.

About half the book (so less than 50 pages) is devoted to techniques (including the techniques to pick up beads with your needle, wow). After that, there's an "author's gallery" section with photos of completed pieces and templates (to get the basic outline shape, no specific instructions). Then there's a student gallery section with just photos (no templates). Finally, there is a glossary, index, etc.

The biggest problem with the book is the poor photo quality. This isn't a printing error with my copy. The photos are dim and shadowed. It is often hard to make out details. In some photos, there is so little contrast that you can't even tell beads and sequins apart (as it looks like a glittery blob of color).

I have Bead Embroidery The Complete Guide: Bring New Dimension to Classic Needlework on my phone. (It's available as a Kindle book.) And I've borrowed Beading on Fabric: Encyclopedia of Bead Stitch Techniques from my local library. Both were much better choices. I was mostly interested in this book for techniques for sequins, but there wasn't enough about sequins to give me anything new.

I recommend looking at one of the books I've listed above and not wasting your time on this one.

I looked through a lot books before I bought this one and I'm really glad I did. He goes through step by step instuctions for both right handed and left handed people. He goes through materials to get and starts with a simple stitch and then builds on that stitch to make something else, much like what one would do in a class. You get instructions on how to work with just beads, just sequins or both. If you a looking to learn to apply beading, and/or sequins to your project this is a good resource. The only reason for giving it 4 stars instead of five is when he explains a stitch he could do a better job in his pictures by labeling each place the needle goes in or out "A, B, C... " like ive seen in many instructional books, but if you read it a few times, you will be able to understand it.

As an artist well-versed in bead-media from beading leather to stitching on frame, as well as cornaly needle work, I give an excellent rating to Mr. Levy's "Bead and Sequin Embroidery Stitches". His full-color, well-illustrated guidance for stitching beads and sequins on fabric is clearly stated with images supporting the wonderful variety of illusion possible with basic stitches. The many worked samples are a significant boon to advancing one's understanding of the properties (color and reflection) of beads and sequins on fabric - an aspect not often mentioned, but every beadworker (who ever had to tear out a line stitched against the grain) needs to learn. The book also includes delightful examples from Mr. Levy's students. This experienced beader enjoyed the book very much, and found both tips and inspiration. How well is it for a beginner? The text is straightforward and easy reading. The stitches are very well explained and have photographs and sampler examples. The rest depends on the reader: Levy explains his system, presents the path (and a materials list) to work his directions; it's up the budding bead artist to jump in and stitch!

When you want somebody to draw you a picture of exactly HOW the beads, sequins, and stitches go together, this is the book for you. It's full of excellent drawn diagrams showing the angles and spacing to use to achieve different effects, and there are great photographs of beautiful final products. I only wish there had been a little more discussion on how the fabric you are embellishing affects the design and method.

A very straightforward book of instructions by an expert in the field. Nice examples and easily understood. Would recommend it for anyone interested in embroidery with beads or sequins, on fabirc or other bases.

I bought this book recently and like it because it shows how to get the basics done and has some patterns to show readers. Not the only book you'll buy if you are into beading, sequins, etc. I'm working on a small project and it did the trick for me.

I like this book because it has great illustrations on how to sew beads onto your embroidery projects. It shows many different styles and ways to accomplish this task. It shows finished work with the beads in place and has step-by-step instructions to complete the project. It has specific details for attaching sequins as well. I wanted a book that would show me simple as well as more complex beading and sequin embroidery and this book does just that.
I am teaching a college class in fabric modification, including beading, this semester, this book had great pictures to help them understand the concepts and techniques.
