I have three of these books now. I truly believe the people who brought these books to life used wizard wands instead of knitting needles. I am so impressed with them. 8 people found this helpful.

Vogue? Knitting 's second superlative Stitchionary presents an expansive collection of cable stitches culled from the magazine's unmatched archives. The book is well organized. I also like that each chart or pattern having abbreviations, has the instructions for those stitch abbreviations on the same page as the swatch. Unlike Knitters Magazine and their books which generally have these at the back of the book in the glossary section.

I'm an avid knitter and love being challenged and have recently begun making my own original patterns and this book is a godsend. It is exactly as the title says. It's a dictionary of stitches (cable stitches to be precise). A mindblowing collection of cable patterns all in one place. I had been searching for a guide like this. It's so nice to have everything in one book. And it's so simple to use. Each cable pattern has a name, a color photo of the finished product, and the pattern written both in long hand and chart form. So whichever method of pattern reading you prefer this book has you covered.

It just lists the cable pattern so you don't have to dig through complicated sweater patterns just to pick out the section of the cable you're trying to replicate. And unlike other stitch glossaries the pictures are in color. It has a wide variety of basic cables and intricate woven/braided cables so there really is something in here for everyone. I wish I had found this book sooner! Vogue is a trusted pattern publisher and so far I haven't found any mistakes. I will definitely consider buying the other books in this series.

This is a must have for the knitter in your family.

I know this series inspires strong reactions in people; definitely a "love it" or "hate it" kind of thing. My expectations for Volume Two: Cables was realistic, I think. I've had Vogue Knitting forever, and enjoy the swatches and clear photos, but I know not to expect finesse or depth. This volume has lots of easy-but-cool stitch patterns, and that's about it. I agree with other reviewers that the lack of a real index with thumbnails of each stitch is a real handicap. I shouldn't have to employ tons of labeled post-its to find my favorite stitches.

The charts, unfortunately, are gray-on-gray affairs that could be a lot bigger. There is plenty of room on the oversized pages to allow for many of the charts to have been at least 50% bigger than they are. However, the photos themselves are generously-sized and very clear.

Great eye-candy and a very attractive selection of cables. The price here at Amazon is so good that I bought it despite the limitations.

PUBLISHERS: If you ever check out the reviews here on Amazon (and you should), you'll find a huge chorus of needlecrafters begging for
SPIRAL-BOUND versions of your books. If I'm teetering on the edge of deciding whether to lay down another $20-$40 on a knitting book, a spiral or turtle-binding will seal the deal.

I enjoy looking through this book and although many of the stitches I have seen before in other books the pictures are very clear and in neutral colors which enhance the stitch pattern as well as making it easy to visualize in other colors. The directions are written and charted. Perfect! If something is unclear or I don't recall the symbol I can glance at the written pattern. One thing I would change is the orientation of the book. It is landscape rather than portrait and it makes it awkward to hold and turn pages. I also have come to prefer the spiral bound books that lie flat. All of the books in this series is landscape however that I have seen. Well worth the money and will remain a staple in my library of stitch pattern books. I think it is clear enough for even beginners to find beautiful stitches to try. I think everyone should design some of the things they make themselves in order to personalize them.

This book is full of great possibilities for cable knitting. There are no patterns for sweaters, scarves, or anything else like that. You would have to innovate on your own to use these options in your work. Directions are very easy to follow and well illustrated. I already tried many of them and they are just as good as they look.

What can I say? It's Vogue, you can't go wrong.

I thought I was moving from an intermediate skill level once I had completed Volume One, but this volume on cables reminded me that I am indeed a beginning knitter. The book includes both written instructions, as well as charts. Many of the patterns are very intricate and a stitch/row counter would come in handy.

One of my favorite stitchionary books. Again, well photographed patterns make it easy to choose which you'd like to use. The book arrived in pristine condition. You'd never know it was used!
I love cables and this book has me knitting lots of them!
