Each stage is accompanied by line diagrams and prickings, while photographs display the finished lace patterns.

An introduction to bobbin lace, by the author of The Technique of Torchon Lace. This book explains the technique using progressively more complex patterns.

Torchon lace (Dutch: stropkant) is a bobbin lace that was made all over Europe. It is continuous, with the pattern made at the same time as the ground. Torchon lace is notable for being coarse and strong, as well as its simple geometric patterns and straight lines. It does not use representational designs. Torchon lace was used by the middle classes for edging or insertion, and also to trim cotton and linen underwear, where it was ideal because of its strength and because it was inexpensive.

Pamela Nottingham explains the basic stitches and techniques and provides a progressive series of patterns to work through. If you're starting out, try a different book, such as Bridget Cook's Torchon Lace Workbook. And if you're looking to learn Bedfordshire lace, Nottingham has a book devoted entirely to that subject alone, which would be a better choice.

As a sequel to her "Technique of Bobbin Lace", Pamela Nottingham has compiled a work on the technique of making and designing Torchon lace. This simple geometric lace was introduced into England in the second half of the 19th century and its popularity among lacemakers has continued to this day. This book deals with the equipment and choice of thread, how to make prickings, the basic stitches and the principles of pattern design. It then gives a series of graduated patterns showing how to create narrow edgings, circular motifs, square and rectangular mats, braids, triangles, circular edgings, collars and insertions. A full explanation of terms is given and all the step-by-step instructions are illustrated with detailed diagrams. Twenty prickings are reproduced to scale for the reader to trace off the page and thirteen grids are provided as the basis for original designs. The book also includes close-up photographs of finished examples.

I like the book as a reference, similar to Pamela Nottingham's other instructionals, but since I am a beginner to this craft, the methods and instructions are too advanced for me to follow. I will keep this book in my library.
