Michelle Cornell organizes workshops for people wishing to learn ikebana in a contemporary context. Japanese flower arranging is so precise, there is a method and reason as to why the plants are placed as they are and it is this that I love. There is no higgledy-piggledy arranging, there is quietness, mindfulness and focus on choosing the appropriate plants, container and resulting arrangement. Her background in art history and design-and her interest in healing art forms-have led her to promote ikebana on a spiritual level as well as an aesthetic one.

Diane Norman, Michelle Cornell. Ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging, is guided by the desire to create harmony between flowers and their surroundings. Thought to be rooted as far back as 600 AD, its name comes from the Japanese "ikeru" (to keep alive, to arrange) and "hana" (flower).

The Japanese have an innate sense of style in the arts, architecture, interior design and especially in their attitude to flowers and plants within the home. Until now, in the West we haven t explored ikebana, the ancient art of arranging plant material, in any great depth. With the trend towards pared-down, simple rooms, now is the time to discover how its sculptural style can complement contemporary interiors. Ikebana is much more than simply flower arranging.

Ikebana is as much - if not more - about the doing of flowers as what gets done .

Ikebana is as much - if not more - about the doing of flowers as what gets done to them. Like all great artistic traditions, its survival relies not only on people who can look past the clichés and Orientalist fantasies of what they think it is, but those able to move the art forward. IN THE ANIMISTIC polytheism at the root of Japanese Shinto culture, god resides in everything - from stones to flowers to the wind. God is all things natural, and so all things natural are god. Arranging flowers has always been considered a way of harmonizing humanity and the natural world.

Outlines how to apply the ikebana sculptural style to promote tranquility in a home, demonstrating Japanese techniques for creating effective floral arrangements that reflect a room design or a season.

I bought this book for my mother who knows very little about the art of Japanese flower arranging. The book has lots of photos and a small technical section at the beginning to lay the groundwork. However, it is not too complicated for the average person. There are chapters for each of the four seasons with many large photo examples. The basis of the book is more about aesthetics rather than technique. It explains mostly about the mood you are hoping to achieve. In other words, it is more about the art than the science. It is a good guide for someone interested in creating simple, pleasing Japanese-style flower arrangements for their dinner parties.

Gorgeous book - lots of pictures - lots of help learning how to arrange flowers with creativity and thoughtfulness. And - you don't have to spend a lot of money doing this. Those of you who have access to a garden will be thrilled with new possibilities to show off nature's beauty. If you have toyed with the idea of learning Japanese flower arrangements - I think you will love this book.

I originally read this book (cover to cover) as checked out from a library when I was working in Japan. But I was so motivated by the book to learn the art of Ikebana that I ordered this book for myself as soon as I returned home. The book has beautiful pictures and explains the steps of each design--starting with more simple arrangements and moving to more complex designs. When I got home I tried to find a class that was teaching Ikebana, but so far I have not found one. So I am still working on the beginner stage af Ikebana with the help of the lessons in this book.

I saw this book in a "posh" decorating shop amd then found it on Amazon for less than half price. The book is a treasure! It explains the science as well as the art of Ikebana in a format that makes sense to a Westerner. I've alread made several arrangements of which I am quite proud. The temptation to add "just one more piece" is always there but the book's guidelines keep one in check. Less is more in Ikebana and now I truly understand the why as well as the how.

I ordered this book to provide a reference for a workshop our local garden club was doing. It is very readable, with excellent photos and simple to understand explanations of the basics of Ikebana. I especially like the orientation for use in modern "western" settings, rather than traditional oriental decor. In sharing it with our instructor, she asked to borrow it to look at as well. I think it was good value for the money.

I always love watching Ikebana. Finally I get some time to learn how to do it myself. This is the first book I read about this topic. It gives background information about the culture and history of Ikebana, principles of different types of Ikebana and detailed step-by-step instruction on how to arrange the flowers. I especially like the sample photos. They are simple, elegant and full of artistry.
a good book, I'm not an expert anyway but nice picture, nice projects.. I'm happy to have it in my house
