I have a horse with nearly perfect manners but it never hurts to improve the manners of a 1,200 pound animal!!! It has an excellent section on join-up and I think it is time for my horse and me to go thru some of the exercises again.

I just got this book yesterday and I have read the beginning and skimmed through it and I already love it. I have a colt that I am bringing along and also two adult horses and I feel this book will be able to help them all in many ways. I love the way the author explains things and puts it in different perspectives for you to understand better. It starts off with an overview of her philosophy and a general understanding of how horses think and behave. Then she teaches you the fundamental ground exercises, then join up, then addresses some common problems. This book is about learning to fix yourself so you can help your horse. Even with limited reading so far I am already changing my attitude about working with my horses. I'm usually quite level headed but I tend to get frusterated and I am hoping this book will show me other alternatives. She just makes so much sense and it helps you realize what you may be doing wrong and gives you insight to help fix it. I can't wait to try out the exercises! Every horse owner should read this!!

I am a longtime horse owner and have always been very interested in learning how to communicate and train horses in a more humane way. I work with a few beginning adult horse owners and this is a perfect book to help them along their way. When followed, the information makes for a good introduction to how horses process requests and think. I also like the way it gives a checklist of skills for humans to teach and horses to learn.

It is similar information about horse communication but a different way of presenting the information to people. I give it a 5 star.

I have bought scads of books as I bought my first horse and was very hungry for guidance. Many books 'assume' alot about where you are in your progress and experience level and many important facts can be overlooked or touched on briefly without enough discussion. Some books even come right out and say, if you don't know how, don't proceed, etc. Thats a fine how do you do after you just spent $20 for a book entitled the first 2 years!!!!
Horses are big, unpredictable animals. Be smart, spend a little money and get professional help in the beginning. If you are determined to learn everything you can, you will be fine. Don't ever be complacent. Friends and neighbors at the boarding stable are always helpful but noone is perfect or knows it all. If they say they do, run, don't walk! Of all the books on horse behavior, relations between the handler and horse, problem solving, and starting young horses, this one has been the most helpful and complete and sure to stay here in my library for many years to come. I can't recommend it enough.

I have been looking for the "perfect" behavior book for horses and this is it! Thorough, easy to understand, and humane, this book discusses techniques, join-up, ground manners, loading, and a host of other behaviors. The descriptions are clear and the instructions are easily laid out. If you want only one reference book for behavior, make it this one!

Excellent read
I actually couldn't put this book down. It is so well written. I didn't realize until I had purchased the book that the author is a student of Monty Roberts. She carries forth his message as well as her own experiences in an informative yet entertaining way. I hope she branches out into DVD's, as well.
