This was an easy to read book that gives a general 101 on starting a pet rescue.

I enjoyed the fact this book spelled out all the important and sometimes boring things people forget to set up when they get excited about rescuing animals. It talks about developing and carrying out policies, recruiting and keeping volunteers/staff, getting the organization noticed, getting legal paperwork and insurance covered, and dealing with common health and behavior problems animals might present. She even talks about having the rescuers make sure to take care of themselves and their human and animal family so not to be overwhelmed by the foster pets or other responsibilities. It was also very smart of the author to put in a lot of emphasis on the rescuers' people skills for networking and working with adopters. Animal rescuers are often not known for their people skills, and can be very judgmental against people surrendering their pets or those who don't know much about animals. It's clear the author has had a lot of experience (and varied experience) with many different animals and knows her stuff. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to start or get heavily involved in pet rescues. However, it is written for/geared toward a foster rescue rather than a shelter or facility, so if you're looking to start a facility you may want another book along with this.

Rescue Matters! is a must have book for anyone considering voluntering for or starting an animal rescue. Dr. Boneham covers all necessary information in a lively, easy to read style. Even those already involved in rescue (like me) can learn something new from her book. I cannot rate this book highly enough. I wish I'd had it 10 years ago when I first started in rescue. It answers all of the questions a new volunteer might ask, plus it covers the information even experienced rescuers and orgainzation officers need to know.

The sample forms alone are worth the price of the book. She covers topics that many other books either miss or overlook, such as how to find, manage and work with volunteers, volunteer burnout, and the importance of policies and procedures.

I have been "rescuing" for years, but last year began rescuing from kill shelters. I had no idea what I was getting into, and wish I had read this first. Absolutely FILLED with common sense advice, tips and how-to's, no rescue organization or individual should be without this. It is the Rescuer's Bible. I have loaned it out so many times, I"ll probably have to buy a few more copies.

Most people go into rescue with good intentions, having no idea what they are getting into. Fortunately, things turned out very well for me and all my rescues (now permanently re-homed animals). And I now do "one at a time" and have a wonderful network of local and national rescues to call on for placement. Because of this book, I managed to get a network in place, and none of my animals are ever "in limbo" for more than a week without finding a permanent home.

I simply cannot emphasize enough how important this book is.

Have been volunteering with a cat rescue group for several years. This book has reinforced much of what I have learned and given me new things to think about. An excellent book for anyone interested in animal rescue and all that comes with it!

This book gives a lot of useful information that one may not think about when deciding to participate in animal rescue. Although some of the detail given are not completely necessary in all areas, it gives information that some people may want to consider. It really depends on what area and how seriously you wish to be involved in animal rescue. Overall a very good resource.

I think this was a good book for getting an overall general picture. I liked the breakdown of the chapters and felt all the topics were covered. Honestly, I'm not sure that any book can really teach you the ins and outs of rescue without doing some volunteering or gaining experience. Through this book I'm more interested about positive training methods.

I like that this book shows it's not all fun, actually it's very hard work. Very rewarding but I'm sure very exhausting as well.

Some good ideas for the shelter I volunteer at, and for the animals I foster, and try to find homes for.
