From the colonial period to 1945 the context of black education in New York State was transformed

Many New York State whites felt threatened by the often uncouth, little educated blacks from the South and tried to separate themselves from them. A result was that in the largest cities, segregated housing spread, and with it, de facto segregated schools appeared. From the colonial period to 1945 the context of black education in New York State was transformed. As blacks became more Christianized and Americanized, whites had less reason to view them as strangers. Legally, blacks moved from slavery to equal citizenship.
