Freire for the Classroom is an anthology of essays by teachers using Paulo Freire's methods in their classrooms. These essays, collected from professional journals, represent some of the best experimental teaching done to adapt Freire's liberatory pedagogy to North American classrooms. The articles show the creative enthusiasm many teachers gain from Freire's ideas, as well as the critical literacy and political awareness students gain through this approach. The book offers critical theory side by side with actual reports of teaching practice, so that philosophy is brought down.

The work of Paulo Freire continues to exercise a strong influence on a variety of liberal and radical educators. In some quarters his name has become synonymous with the very concept and practice of critical pedagogy. Increasingly, Freire's work has become the standard reference for engaging in what is often referred to as teaching for critical thinking, dialogical pedagogy, or critical literacy

This is a good old favorite for those who wish to understand more about the importance of school, liberation, and liberating schools and minds of learners and teachers. Presented as a series of essays from different educators, this book gives not only a broad idea of what liberatory teaching is and does, but also provides you with some great examples of what any educator can try out in their classroom. I'd say that it's a must-read especially if you are just getting started on the ideas of revolutionizing (or just shaking up) your classroom; and it's a useful resource for those who are already on that path of thought inquiry.

I bought this book thinking it would help me with my teaching skills. What a waste of money. My students weren't receptive to the things I have tried throughout the years. What works in Brazil did not work in the United States.

I'm sorry to see that a previous review did not find Shor's book helpful. This book is the clearest application of critical pedagogy in the daily life of a teacher and her/his students. If there is any justice in the world, it will never go out of print until the structural problems of U.S. education which i identifies have been corrected.
