8. Future of External Reporting 101 Kristina Powers.

In this volume, the editor and authors take a proactive, strategicstance by proposing a roadmap for the reinvention of institutionalresearch. A decade ago, in volume 104 of New Directions forInstitutional Research, M. W. Peterson proposed that the futurewould challenge institutional research not only to help improveinstitutions but also to help facilitate their redesign andtransformation. It appears that Peterson?s future has arrived. Withthe increasing demands placed on colleges anduniversities?requirements for continuous improvement,evidence-based decision-making, and accountability?institutionalresearch offices must now do more than report and fill datarequests. Moreover, with budgets shrinking, institutions mustsearch for more efficient and effective ways of working, makedecisions about which work will continue to be performed and how,and perhaps reorganize their existing programs, structures, andpatterns. These needs may also demand more of institutionalresearch. At most schools, however, for institutional research toplay this new, substantive role, the field will first need toredesign and transform itself.

This is the 143rd volume of the Jossey-Bass higher educationreport series New Directions for Institutional Research.Always timely and comprehensive, New Directions forInstitutional Research provides planners and administrators inall types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas asresource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.
