Jerry Gill first discusses the nature of cognitive activity (the knowing) from an epistemological perspective, and then moves on to a consideration of human nature (the knower) and of curriculum (the known). The book's three parts each begin with a survey of the ideas of four major educational theorists, . Whitehead, John Dewey, Paulo Freire, and Carl Rogers. Professor Gill then presents his own angle of approach and concludes with a discussion of practical classroom principles and practices, especially at the college and university level.

The Jerry H. Wood Memorial lecture series was established in 1997 in honor of Professor of History Jerry H. Wood and was the first series at the College to honor an African American faculty member. In addition to teaching, Wood served as associate provost from 1986-89 from and twice chaired the Black Studies program. A prolific scholar who was proficient in both Spanish and Portuguese, Wood’s scholarly work has been influential in colonial, Black, and Latin American studies. In addition to his scholarly work, Wood was beloved by his students and his colleagues.

Gill concludes the book on Kazantzakis’s philosophical and theological thought where he has illuminated the Cretan’s understandings of nature, human nature and the nature of the divine by weaving through the major novels and writings of this most famous author from the island of Crete by returning our focus to the home of Kazantzakis.
