What do you think about: Making the Grade: What Your Sixth Grade Needs to Know and ArtPak You can type in books. com and type in Making the Grade Sixth to get a good glimpse of it. It looks pretty good to me. I'm definitely not sure at all on what art curriculum I can go with. I know about co-ops, but my dd is not in a situation where she can go into those. Everybody in her local school is using Holt for all subjects. I definitely do like what I've seen in Holt, but it seems very expensive.

"A brand-new title in this important series gives parents easy-to-apply methods for helping to educate their children who are starting in the fourth grade. It's a combination manual and advice book, suitable both for parents cooperating with their child's teachers in standard classroom settings, and for home schoolers, where parents take direct control of their child's studies. Making the Grade books are not textbooks, but practical curriculum guides. Written by authorities in elementary education, they advise parents on books, software, and other teaching tools. Each book presents guiding principles for teaching reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Pages are perforated for multipurpose use. Each title in the series contains four curriculum sections:

* Promoting literacy-reading, writing, listening, and speaking

* Math-number patterns, problem solving, and other math-related concepts

* Science-life, earth, and physical sciences

* Social Studies-history, geography, economics, and culture

Each section outlines subject matter to be covered, augmented with planning and implementation strategies for parents and teachers. Advice includes ways to explain difficult concepts to children, suggestions for interactive learning in music and art, activities to promote hands-on learning experiences, and more. Sections titled In Your Community describe ways to integrate local cultural affairs, business activities, environmental concerns, and government functions with a child's education. Though written primarily for parents, this book will appeal to grade four teachers looking for new ideas and methods. It features maps, photos, and illustrations, many in color.

While this series has been very helpful in ensuring we're not skipping topics while homeschooling, do be careful with information presented in the book. We've encountered some outright false content.

Turtles are not invertebrates, for example. They do not have an exoskeleton. Their carapace originates in the endoskeleton and they certainly are vertebrates. The book would lead you to believe that turtles are giant green ladybugs, more similar to crawdads than reptiles. On the other hand, errors like this provide an excellent incentive for teaching critical thinking, research, and analysis. Textbooks are fallible, as is every authority.

I like it because it gives the basic core subjects with reproducibles, craft ideas, and plenty of extras for further study. One of my favorite things about the entire series is that there is no set schedule that one must adhere to. I can choose to do math three times and history twice per week, or if one day of the week is a holiday, I'm not behind in anything. The subjects are arranged and labeled well: I like the numbering system...easy to keep track of.
I would not say this is EVERYTHING your child should know for each grade, but what is does have does cover the basics, and gives plenty of ideas for more research.

This book is a good place to start with for any homeschooler or parent who wants to know what the basic requirements a fourth grader needs to know. If you're homeschooling and not using a textbook curriculum this helps to "fill those gaps" that might get overlooked in the midst of the other things you are covering. My daughter enjoys it and likes the choice you have at the end for further learning. This is a consumable product so you will need to purchase one for each student. I would only have improved it by adding more pictures and maybe less script for the teacher.

This book really does cover a full year curriculum. You do have outside references and books that are suggested that help out. I have used the "Making the Grade" for several grade levels with success. Note: low paperwork in book that can be supplemented with Spectrum books or printout from online. This is good for home school or parents trying to fill in the gaps.

I am only giving this a 3 stars, because the pages were not cut correctly. I had to go through each pages with a letter opener to separate it. Thanks for that printers.
