Writing Practice: Grade 3 Paperback – January 1, 2006. Even though my son complained when it was time to practice writing, he always feels a sense of accomplishment when he completes a page or two. It's challenging enough for an 8 year old, but not so hard that he gets discouraged.

As an educator and tutor, I find a sizable number of students to be reluctant writers. Sadly, lack of intervention has resulted in some of them going all the way up to middle school and even high school before this is deemed to be a problem, by which time a lot of effort is required to help them become more efficient writers. Early intervention is always best, and there are many books on the market which can help educators and parents provide children with the necessary foundation to improve their writing skills.

"Writing Practice Grade 2" by Scholastic focuses on several core skills:
Legibly print words and sentences - imperative to lay the foundation now than deal with messy handwriting down the road!
Write and revise simple stories - fiction and non-fiction - the exercises here require children to write simple, short sentences so it never becomes tedious or overwhelming especially in the case of reluctant writers
Write a friendly letter - interesting templates are provided requiring children to come up with creative answers to certain prompts
Use complete sentences, proper punctuation, and correct spelling - a pet peeve of mine, and the repetitive exercises (lightened by attractive color visuals) help reinforce core writing skills
Use quotation marks - never too early to learn this!
Use commas - Commas can be the bane of English teachers everywhere (over usage) so this is helpful

The exercises are varied and illustrated in color providing enough motivation for both engaged learners and less motivated ones. My daughter who is in second grade enjoys working on these exercises and I usually use one or two exercises as prompts before launching off into longer writing exercises which are thematic in nature. For example, after a lesson on punctuation, I provided her with a prompt on "I am thankful for...", given that November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving. I then checked her work for punctuation and provided her specific feedback. Over the course of the month, I have been getting her to work on her second draft, this time focusing on content and how she can bring her writing piece to life by adding adjectives and verbs.

There are lots of potential in this book for teachers, homeschoolers, and for parents seeking to supplement their child's writing curriculum.

This book is great for lots of drills to get your 2nd graders writing skills up to speed. It's not particularly thick and if your child is practicing in it regularly, he or she will finish pretty quickly. I like it because it teaches writing the old-fashioned way: lots of practice, lots of drills. Many of the schools don't go over and over something until all but the brightest students get it. The teacher introduces new material, the student has a week to get it, then the teacher quickly moves on, leaving some students scratching their heads in confusion.

The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because it's too short.

My son loves this book. We use it as additional homework practice. If you kid loves activity books they are sure to like this one!

Very helpful exercises to assist your child with studying. I find my child likes when I "grade" her papers and add stickers. It makes studying "fun".

Excellent help for the kids to master their craft. I would recommend this series to every parent that cares about their child's education.

This doesn't compare to the other workbooks available, however it is the best practice for writing. My son hates doing this workbook because it does require A LOT of writing, which isn't one of his strengths.
I'm a teacher, so I was looking for some fun writing practice for my students. This book is not for photo copying, so it won't be very useful.
